My MIL just told me over the phone that my SIL (my BIL's wife, who my MIL doesn't like) has only 'gone and gotten herself pregnant!!' (cue exasperated sigh from MIL). My response 'well I'm sure she didn't do it by herself'

My MIL does hold quite old-fashioned views, but this has just really annoyed me! AIBU?

YANBU. My boss said the same to me about my pregnancy and was met with the same response and a very icy death stare.

You should have responded, "Wow, that's clever! How did she manage that?" and waited silently for a reply! Your MIL doesn't sound very nice.

YANBU. Ofcourse she didn't climb on top of herself and get pregnant. Does MIL think SIL has "trapped" her precious son? Does she have a good reason for disliking SIL?

Gone and gotten herself pregnant means im mil's eyes she is pregnant when she shouldn't be so are s and bil saving to buy house and now won't be able to/ already struggling with 3 other kids/ not planning a family for a couple of years?

It is a sexist comment but is there a reason for mil's cattiness.

MIL sounds like a horrid person

MIL isn't a 100% nasty person, she is just very very old fashioned and to people she doesn't really like (i.e. SIL) she can be quite unkind.

SIL and BIL are already married with one child, I just think she thinks it's 'too soon' for them to have another (DN1 is two)

I think she doesn't like SIL because she doesn't think she's 'good enough' to marry her eldest son, and because she got pregnant quite early on in their relationship and thus they had a hasty marriage. They do seem very happy together though, but this doesn't seem to factor into MIL's opinion of her.

When I responded she just went "Um..well...no...you know what I mean...'

BIL is practically angelic in her eyes, so it's obviously not his doing.....
