To stop recycling...

For now, I will start again!

I'm usually an avid recycler, rinsing out my tubs and placing them in the box, putting said box out every 2 weeks for collection. I've not done this in 2 weeks now.

Our boxes are so user - unfriendly, they are like storage boxes with material elasticated lids that you have to take on and off every time you want to put something in it. I'm 35 weeks preggers, bending is a real joy right now. It's bloody windy here, I'm fed up chasing the boxes up and down the street and collecting my recycling from other peoples gardens.

I can't keep the boxes inside as dogs pee on them when they are out for collection. I wish the council would give us something else, like a proper bucket! I usually fill the tub for plastics/glass etc in no time at all.

It's just all to much like hard work for me right now - so I'm quitting!

When the wind dies down, when bending over gets easier... I'll start again.

There's something deliciously naughty about throwing a milk carton in the wheely bin.

Can't your partner take care of the recycling for the next few months?

takingiteasy · 19/03/2012 22:14

Possibly but I'm not one to sit and look at rubbish/mess and wait for someone else to do it, if I'm tidying the kitchen I want it all out the road, not kicking about until he's home!

Yes but you could sling it in a bag outside and he could do it when he's home.

Your recycling containers do sound fiddly and annoying. We just have one big green wheelie bin now which we can chuck pretty much anything in, no sorting or bending down to be done, so I appreciate what you're saying.

TotemPole · 19/03/2012 22:18

Could you put it in a carrier and store it out of the way in cupboard. Then he can take it out to the box each day.

But, if you can't manage it, then giving up recycling for a few weeks isn't the end of the world.

hiddenhome · 19/03/2012 22:18

I refused to recycle until the council had provided us with the blue top wheelie bins that they promised. Before the wheelie bins we just had green bags which fell over and spilled out the contents all the time. They were totally annoying. I do recycle now because I approve of the new wheelie bin Smile

takingiteasy · 19/03/2012 22:19

It is the fiddlyness of them, they are infuriating! I can hear some blowing about the street just now - won't be mine though! The streets can be a mess with broken glass etc because of the stupid things.

I've been doing this recycling lark for years, we still get weekly normal collections but I usually only put the bin out every 2nd (yeah I'm that good) so I think I earned my break!

Yanbu

takingiteasy · 19/03/2012 22:21

Oh god bags must be even worse!

Do your neighbours feel the same?

It might be worth getting on to the council letting them know how crap the boxes are.

AKissIsNotAContract · 19/03/2012 22:23

YANBU, lots of it is dumped in landfill anyway.

curiositykitten · 19/03/2012 22:23

Surely bending down to take off a lip/top and put it back on again isn't that difficult.

We have the same set up. I put a brick on top of/inside mine to stop it blowing around in the wind.

takingiteasy · 19/03/2012 22:26

I'd say about 50% of the street have given up. The boxes are county wide, we did seem to be ahead of them game when they were issued 8 years ago compared to elsewhere but it's ground to a halt, no progress since!

I email them and complain, every time I have to request new boxes as they've vanished in the wind. The lorry doesn't come until about 1pm but when I'm working I have to put the boxes out at 8am and hope for the best!

I know it's not that difficult but when I'm sicking up hotness through heartburn at every bend and a bump like a rock - I'll do what I can to avoid as many bends in a day as possible!

YANBU, lots of it is dumped in landfill anyway.

Do you have proof of this? People generally say this when they can't be arsed.

AKissIsNotAContract · 19/03/2012 22:33

yes

takingiteasy · 19/03/2012 22:33

I don't know about it being dumped in landfill but I know despite us having a box for paper/card and one for plastic/glass they are dumped together into the lorry. Yes, I was stuck behind it one day watching what was going on...

So why not give us a bloody proper bin?

we have blue bin for recycling you put all paper card platic and cans in it collected alternate weeks with normal waste has mini wheelie bin for glass collected every 4 weeks, there is a mini bin for food waste but we dont do that as we have a compost bin

where my mother lives similar to OP but there if you put brick on lid its not collected as bricks too heavy or unsafe for bin collectors to lift but its fine if lid blows away they send someone out with new one really green that!!
