To let the neighbours replace their own damn aerials..

Im currently having my chimney stack removed and built up again (it had been bulging out on 1 side with 4 heavy pots on top of it, neighbour had kept mentioning it to me to get done but as weve just renovated for a year and only moved in past jan it wasnt high on our priorities until now)

so a week after we move in we pull up outside and next door neighbour has a guy on our chimney stack putting an aerial on, i said to him i dont mind for now but it will have to come off soon when we get it all fixed, he said yes. as soon as the insurance money had come through and i started getting quotes i told him again the aerial will have to come off and to make sure it doesnt disrupt him why not do it sooner and just get someone to pop it over onto his own stack. nothing happened, so friday we told him work was starting sat morning, the scaffold was already up so he should have known by now the whole stack is being removed, yet he waited until yesterday afternoon to come out screaming at my builder telling them to fix the aerial cos the tv in their kids room had gone off (builder later brought down 4 aerials with him, none are for my house at all, all the wires are going to his side).

im fuming now that today he has been out telling my dp that we should get the aerials put back on as soon as possible, dp luckily said the same as i was thinking and told him he had been given enough notice to get then moved, his own stack is bare and as this is new i dont want him putting his 4 aerials back onto mine when his own stack is sat right there!

aibu to tell him to sort it himself and use his own chimney stack, trivial i know but its been going on for ages and hes petty as it is without giving him reason to have something else to moan about.

I believe that to fix anything to your property they have to have your express permission. I'd tell him to shove his ariel where the sun don't shine, and that given his attitude he is no longer welcome to use your property.

Teeb · 18/03/2012 14:14

YANBU. I'm not fully understanding why he thought he had any right to attach the aerials to your chimney in the first place either.

Catsmamma · 18/03/2012 14:15

i can't believe you let him reinstall his aerial on your chimney....tell him to bugger off!

curiositykitten · 18/03/2012 14:17

I'd definitely recommend him somewhere else (much more unpleasant and uncomfortable) for him to install his aerial.

ExitPursuedByABear · 18/03/2012 14:18

Why did he not use his own chimney stack in the first place?

Tell him to do one.

Bearcrumble · 18/03/2012 14:20

Of course he should never have had them on your chimmney stack. He's taking the piss. You had every right to remove them WITHOUT notice.

salempickles · 18/03/2012 14:21

haha thanks thought it was me being weird about my own chimney stack, the first 3 i didnt even know ehere there as they couldnt be seen from the road or garden, it was only builder who told me they were there when he got up yesterday. the last 1 was already up when i arrived home and did ask his wife why it wasnt on their own stack, she said it was more difficult for the aerial fitter to get to (we have the same layout garden so that was a lie basically) i said it was fine as i knew it was coming down soon anyway and told them this, surely they didnt expect the chimney to come down and then we pay for him to ruin it agin with his 4 aerials, also the side they were all placed was the side they were all fitted to anyway! he should be lucky i havent mentioned that his aerials have caused the damage and i expect him to pay for the repairs!

Cheeky sod. YANBU. Does he want to put his solar panels on your roof while he's at it?

PigletJohn · 18/03/2012 14:39

is it by any chance a terraced or semi where the chimneystack is on the partition wall and shared by the two houses?

if not, where is the chimney?

salempickles · 18/03/2012 15:28

It is on the partition wall, but the side its on they had all the chimneys inside their house removed and a whole new chimney put in the other side so they didnt have to share it with anyone, its this new chimney they created that they dont want to touch for some reason, so theyre quite happy to keep adding things to our stack which is now soley supported by our house, so anything they add to it and causes damage only damages our house, not their own ifswim.

ABigGirlDoneItAndRanAway · 18/03/2012 16:26

YANBU tell him to put the aerials on his own house and that if you see one on your stack once it is fixed it will be removed and sold for scrap metal.

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2012 16:33

Let us know what he says salem. Grin

squeakytoy · 18/03/2012 17:11

Why on earth would he need four aerials? A house only needs one.

MinnieBar · 18/03/2012 17:13

Isn't he going to be screwed anyway when your area goes digital??

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 18/03/2012 17:15

You have very wierd neighbours! Who in their right mind would think they have a right to attach their stuff to someone else's house?

oldraver · 18/03/2012 18:35

Minnie why would going Digital make any difference ? Confused.

I would pop a not through or have a quick word and tell him to use his own stack

TheMonster · 18/03/2012 18:38

I would be fuming and I'd have told him to take it down as soon as it was put up.
Anyway, he had notice that you were doing work, and he can sod right off. It's not your problem. Make sure he doesn't put it back on your new chimney.

Acandlelitshadow · 18/03/2012 18:48

He's a cheeky sod.

Tell him to poke it.

AKMD · 18/03/2012 18:51

YANBU and he has entitlement issues.

HalfPastWine · 18/03/2012 18:52

I'd be furious. What a cheeky git, tell him to sod off!

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2012 18:52

DH says you could charge him rent. Grin

salempickles · 18/03/2012 19:05

Well update is his wife has just called round, only to ask about buying the chimney pots we have removed as she wants them for her garden, i know for a fact she already knew my fil was having them as he told me she had asked directly and he told her himself??? so i noticed in her hand she had 1 of those indoor aerials and wondered if this was for my benefit. so said is that working now that youve got one of those, she launched into a rant about how each of her children has a tv in their room and didnt know there had been that many aerials on our stack, then without saying said if the scaffolding is still here and its ok to use she would get somebody out to move them all across to her own stack.

why i had to have the misfortune of never having spoken to her before god knows, and i hope her dp knows of her plans, but as i work from home ill be here most of the time so at least ill be able to stop them getting up on my stack again if they do try. and fingers crossed ill have 4 ugly aerials gone from my roof by tuesday.

although i do like the idea of charging rent for however long theyve been there for Smile

squeakytoy · 18/03/2012 19:36

I still dont understand why you would have 4 aerials ... there is only a need for one aerial, and then a splitter to put an aerial point into each room.

As for the digital switchover, most aerials will be absolutely fine, but plenty wont be able to support a digital signal and will need replacing.

thederkinsdame · 18/03/2012 20:10

Don't even let them use the scaffolding. Or if they do tell them they'll have to chip in for a day's hire. Cheeky feckers

AKMD · 18/03/2012 20:11

They sound barking. I bet they go up there tonight dressed in catsuits and tapes their aerials to your stack :o
