To be really upset reading the 'we believe you campaign' thread?

I've read the first 100 posts, and I am in bits. This never happens to me; I am not usually affected by things I read on screen. Nor have I had to come away from the screen for an hour to calm down, from the rage I felt on behalf of these poor women. Just how the BLUE FUCK is there only a 5% conviction rate?

I have nothing else to say; I'm speechless over these accounts.

YANBU at all. if only rape invoked the same reaction in everyone else (judges!!!) then we wouldn't need the we believe you campaign in the first place.

but dont be speechless, use that anger and spread the message. i have linked to the campaign on my FB page. could you do that? or twitter?

oikopolis · 14/03/2012 19:39

it's awful isn't it?

that thread is v painful to read. have been raped myself, know the drill, sadly it is all par for the course and none of those stories are shocking to me (sad to say).

almost every time i've disclosed told a friend what happened to me, i would say probably one or two friends a year, that friend will well up and say "it happened to me too and i've never told anyone" and then it all comes tumbling out, and it is just so fucking heartbreaking.

it is so common. and that's what makes it 1000000x worse imo. so prevalent, and yet these poor women are so ashamed and silenced.

I read it earlier and have been thinking about it this afternoon, re. actual reporting of rape. I wonder if a lot of raped women have in the past simply not known where to turn, being perhaps frightened of the police/court process and not being aware of or having access to other agencies.

For example, women raped by their husbands. I believe this was only made illegal in 1992, which is not so long ago. I know women whom this has happened to before that date. How would they have known how to deal with it, even in terms of their own domestic circumstances, let alone involving outsiders? I'm thinking of one woman in particular who suffered this and I doubt she even knows such organisations as Rape Crisis exist, or if back then - living an already isolated and rural life, pre-internet as well - if she'd have been able to get access to them.

How do you link the campaign?

Anyone reading that thread with a heart couldn't not have their stomach turned by it. I'm halfway through the second page and I'm taking another 'rest' if that's the right word.

And 'stop Kony' bracelets? I want a 'we believe you' one.

if you look at the top of the thread there is a recommend button with the FB logo in it. click it. i think the twitter campaign is #webelieveyou but i may be wrong as i am not on twitter.

IAmBooyhoo · 14/03/2012 19:43

top of the thread under the title that should say.

IAmBooyhoo · 14/03/2012 19:45

good idea about the bracelets aswell OP.

slatternlymother · 14/03/2012 19:47

Thanks boo I've done that Smile

I'd wear a campaign bracelet with pride. Maybe profits could go to a crisis centre.

if you report your post about the bracelet idea, MNHQ will see it, otherwise they wont know it's been suggested. crisis centre would be perfect considering that they are the ones suffering the most due to the government cuts. (thinking refuge but i know there are others suffring)

slatternlymother · 14/03/2012 19:59

I've dropped them a quick email, but I'll do that too.

I just have been galled in recent weeks, especially with those spicy comments from SWMNBN and now all these women's accounts. How, in this day and age are women's bodies and souls still 'up for grabs'?

@slatternlymother

And 'stop Kony' bracelets? I want a 'we believe you' one.

Hello. This is a great idea, but I'm afraid we don't have the resources to organise it here (we're a pretty small team!). Do feel free to organise something like this yourselves though, if that's something you can do. Let us know how you're getting on and whether we can help with anything.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Yes! Loving the bracelets idea
