To want the sugar put in my coffee

So today I have to drive DD to school after a dr appointment. Am in desperate need for caffeine so go through a mcdonalds drive through to get a coffee. It's not busy there. So they go to hand me the coffee and ask if I want sugar so I said yes please can you put it in for me and give it a quick stir. I thought this was a perfectly reasonable request as otherwise I would have to stop park and do this, which somewhat defeats the point of a drive thru? And no way would I ask DD to do it and end up with coffee spilt everywhere!!

The young man serving was perfectly happy to do this but the women working in there were all hysterical with laughter at him doing it. Is it not a reasonable request then? Do others do this??

So if you're not going to stop to put the sugar in I presume you are going to be drinking it while driving???

cathkidstonbag · 14/03/2012 12:28

When I'm stuck in traffic yes. Which is inevitable on my journey.

OP would you like to use my flame proof suit? Lasted me well on my thread the other week Grin

PopcornMouseInBoots · 14/03/2012 12:40

Yikes. You'll still get a ticket if you drink it while in a queue, you know - it's still illegal.

ZZZenAgain · 14/03/2012 12:45

I don't think many people ask the service staff to do it.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 14/03/2012 12:46

Yep, still drinking and driving even if you're in a queue!

Tbh I'd rather put my own sugar in.

Hellboy · 14/03/2012 12:50

Infact, why the fook didnt you just drive out of the drive thru and just stop somewhere to throw the sugar in and stir it? Would have took like, what, 10 seconds? Confused

DeepPurple · 14/03/2012 12:52

It's not illegal to drink coffee / tea / water when driving.

It only becomes an offence if you are driving without due care and attention etc.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 14/03/2012 12:59

Really? I know someone who got fined for drinking a cup of tea at the wheel. I always thought it was.

Hellboy · 14/03/2012 13:01

Deep - I think its at the discretion of the officer, am sure I read a while ago that someone was fined for drinking out of a bottle of water whilst at traffic lights.

DeepPurple · 14/03/2012 13:45

It can be an offence if drinking something causes an accident / bad driving. They were talking about making it an offence but I'm pretty sure it's not official.
Google searches don't bring anything up.

DeepPurple · 14/03/2012 13:47

I've found the offence which would be "Not in proper control of a vehicle". This wouldn't apply if you were stationery at the time but would apply if you were moving and only had one hand on the steering wheel.

Hellboy, no wouldn't have taken 10 seconds. No car parking spaces left so drive to nearest supermarket. Wrestle with hot coffee and no surface to put it on. Then I've got an empty sugar packet and drippy stirrer to dispose of so have to get out of car to find a bin.

I'm not asking if it was unreasonable to drink it in the car whilst stationary, I'm asking if I shouldn't have asked the "server". It seemed a simple request to me.

Dd was thoroughly embarrassed by it all which makes it all worthwhile :)

Dont all McDelishes have grill bays? Why not just stick the car in one of those? Surely they couldnt have been in use at that time of the morning?

Hellboy · 14/03/2012 15:49

But for future ref there is no need to 'wrestle' with hot coffee if you are parked up. You can hold the cup in one hand, open the sugar packet with your teeth and pour in. The empty packet can go into the ashtray bit, lick the stirrer to get rid of any excess moisture and stick it with the sugar packet. When your coffee is finished just stick it all in there and throw away when you get chance in a years time when it starts to grow fur if you are like me

As for the no surface to put it on, just put it wherever you were going to put it whilst you are driving.
