to block this woman?

notitswerebritish · 12/03/2012 08:44

i have recently offered a load of old shit stuff from our garage on freecycle. and for EVERY item the same woman has replied. always first. very polite message but saying yes to everything. so i blocked her email addy, i wanted to give other people the chance to get a yes reply when they asked for things and blocking her was my way of not forgetting and saying yes to her.
today i offered a few bits and i got an email off her from another account of hers, ( not the one i blocked) saying she wanted everything and that she wanted to know why i blocked her other address.
so ive replied that i got fed up with her generic 'i want it' replys and that i would wait for another 'taker'.
She has replied in less than friendly terms complaining that she needed the things i offered, (3 duvets, 2 breadmakers, a tv,and some shelving) and i am being selfish....
so am i?

Report her to the moderators.

NevilleBarnes · 12/03/2012 08:53

Do you state the fairness policy? Ie that you will wait to receive replies from those who do not receive/read the email immediately? I've seen it on lots of posts. It does make things more fair and then she has no grounds for complaint as you have been upfront.

WorraLiberty · 12/03/2012 08:53

Well how do you know she doesn't need them?

There could be many reasons why she's having to build a home from scratch.

At the end of the day, Freecycle exists to keep these things out of landfill sites so surely that's what matters most?

housebyariver · 12/03/2012 08:54

Speaking as a Freecycle moderator, just report her to the moderators of the group. she may be well known to them already!

Magneto · 12/03/2012 08:55

YANBU who needs two breadmakers?

notitswerebritish · 12/03/2012 08:56

2 breadmakers worra?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 12/03/2012 08:58

Yes - because everyone needs two breadmakers?

She sounds like an eBayer or carbooter. Report to the moderators.

Yes - Freecycle started/exists to keep things out of landfill is - greediness and selling on (unless you are honest about it) are not part of the ethos.

WorraLiberty · 12/03/2012 08:58

Ok so she could have (and might have) just accepted one breadmaker

But if for example she's left an abusive home or had a fire and was uninsured, there are lots of reasons why she might need so many things.

gamerwidow · 12/03/2012 08:59

I don't understand the need to play god about who gets your old crap TBH.
You don't want it, she does so why wouldn't you just let her have it?

Mrsjay · 12/03/2012 08:59

she sounds like she maybe ebaying stuff report her to the mods , you dont have to give her anything ,

notitswerebritish · 12/03/2012 09:00

she asked for both tho worra, i posted as 2 seperate offers, a silver one and a white one, and she replied to both and said that she had already replied about the other but would come and get both.
i think freecycle is there to help people, like those you say about, but people replying yes me to everthing means that those in need get nothing, which is why i blocked her.

YANBU. I always use the fair offer policy to give others time to respond, but even then I still get people chasing me up after an hour or two of sending their first email.

My poor mother actually had a man telephoning her to harass her for stuff she had posted (she has an unusual surname and isn't ex directory). The moderators had a strong word with him.

PooPooInMyToes · 12/03/2012 09:07

Cheeky woman! Obviously wanting to sell on. Id report her.

WorraLiberty · 12/03/2012 09:09

Ahh well you didn't say that

If you'd said AIBU to block this woman because she wants two bread makers on two separate listings, it would have put a different slant on it...although even then she might not expect to be given both of them so by asking for both, she might have thought it gave her a greater chance of getting at least one of them.

I'm still a bit 'meh' about all these freecycle posts where people assume automatically there old tat is going to be ebayed because there are many reasons that people might need these things.

Fiendishlie · 12/03/2012 09:13

It's your stuff you can give it to who the feck you please. I wouldn't be bothered to block her, just don't acknowledge her emails.
If you are the polite type unlike me who responds to all who have requested an item of yours, she will see that you have given it to someone else.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 12/03/2012 09:17

Worra - whether the woman needs the stuff or is selling it on actually takes second place in consideration to her attitude

i got an email off her from another account of hers, ( not the one i blocked) saying she wanted everything and that she wanted to know why i blocked her other address. so ive replied that i got fed up with her generic 'i want it' replys and that i would wait for another 'taker'. She has replied in less than friendly terms complaining that she needed the things i offered, (3 duvets, 2 breadmakers, a tv,and some shelving) and i am being selfish

What part of that is acceptable - no matter whether she really needs it or not??

IF she actually really needed the stuff, surely her reply would have been much more explantory/apologetic?!

There's no way anything of mine would be going to someone who spoke to me like that.

TinOfTigerFood · 12/03/2012 09:20

YANBU who needs 1 bread maker let alone 2!?

NurseJennyLee · 12/03/2012 09:22

YANBU.
I love the whole ideology of Freecycle, sadly in life the minority of piss-takers spoil it.

Report her to the mods.

TheCrackFox · 12/03/2012 09:33

YANBU

She sounds like the type who would sell it all in a car boot sale the following week.

LentillyFart · 12/03/2012 09:38

I'm trying to understand why it's anyone's concern what a freecycler does with the stuff once they've got it? If she wants to pile it up and set fire to it - well, that's her business. Freecycle exists to keep stuff out of landfill not for people to lord it over who gets what and what they do with it! If you're that bothered that she might be selling it on how about you sell it on?

AwkwardMary · 12/03/2012 09:39

YANBU but I wouldnt bother even blocking her but would simply ignore. She'll get the message. This is why we avoid freecycle tbh there are too many oddballs and you're inviting strangers into your life.

notitswerebritish · 12/03/2012 09:41

i never said i was bothered with her selling it on.
i was bothered with her attitude and the fact i think that freecycle exists to help people who need it not just to give to the first responder, esp when that person is always the same person.
