Walking past the local fish and chip shop on the way home from school the other day, I mentioned that next time we have chippy for tea, i'm going to ask for, chips and fish, with vinegar and salt. DS was not happy! (He's 6 btw) He said I can't, that it's not right! I am not allowed by him to ask for chips and fish in that order.
So when did it become not right?
WIBU to ask for chips and fish and not fish and chips?
Why are certain things said this way round anyway?
Cheese and onion?
Ant and Dec?
Salt and pepper?

Why do they sound so uncomfortable said the other way round? Hmm

So, AIBU? Grin

I liked your link Aribura.

By the way, under the box that you write in there is a tick-box that say "Convert links automatically" - if you click to put a tick in it then your link (when you post) will be clickable.

Couples are referred to with the person you knew first or the person you know best or the person you see the most of coming first. Usually these are the same.

maddening · 27/02/2012 17:27

I think you could get away with "chips with fish" but "chips and fish " does sound wrong....

Shugochara · 27/02/2012 17:28

Want fish 'n' chips...

Byeckerslike · 27/02/2012 17:30

Ahhh i knew someone who always got cards from 'Dad and Mum' vair strange!

nobodyspecial · 27/02/2012 17:31

I can't wait to have conversations like these with my DD! Grin

candr · 27/02/2012 17:35

Somethings have to go a certain way around. Not great when a kid askes for their 'fork and knife'
You could always ask for a type of fish which would score you a win but not embarass your son i.e chips and haddock please...

AWimbaWay · 27/02/2012 17:48

You're right about the couples thing Trills, I always wondered why I normally say the woman first, but actually it is because that is who I normally know best or for the longest, in the few cases I do it the other way around I have known the man longest.

AWimbaWay · 27/02/2012 17:51

Pizza topping;

Pineapple and ham

sweetcorn and tuna

tomato and cheese

Wrong, wrong, wrong!

lancaster · 27/02/2012 17:58

ChishAndFips · 27/02/2012 18:04

This is the thread for me Grin. Sorry OP, your DS is definitely right!

TheFirstMrsGClooney · 27/02/2012 18:09

But surely it's a fish supper you would ask for?!

Kaekae · 27/02/2012 19:15

YABU, if you asked for it in that order I doubt they would taste as nice.

You mostly all seem to disagree with me by saying that the fish is the main part of the meal with the chips being the accompaniment. Fair enough, but...when people refer to it, they, in most cases say, the chippy, or chip shop, which puts the chips as being most important, otherwise it would be known as the fish shop. Also nearly all orders are chips with something else I.e. pie, sausage, fish.

OP posts:
lottiegb · 28/02/2012 10:32

That's just because it's chips with everything (or chips alone) - and the sign would get too long if it had to say 'fish, pie, sausage...'

ShowOfHands · 28/02/2012 10:38

It's chish and fips here.

KurriKurri · 28/02/2012 10:43

You could solve the problem entirely by calling it by it's proper name - a fish supper.

Gavel.

seeker · 28/02/2012 10:44

My ds used always to say chips and fish because he liked the chips best.

seeker · 28/02/2012 10:45

Ooooh, I wish I could have a White pudding supper tonight!
