Jeffing World Jeffing Book Day. AGAIN.

World Book day is upon me again. WHY oh WHY does DS2 always want to be some aminal or monster creation?!

Last year, after MUCH persuasion, I got him to dress up as George from George's marvellous medicine.

This year he wants to be Fantastic Mr Fox. And REFUSES to countenance any other character. (I should add - he has Autism).

DS1 is EASY - last year he was Mr.Gum, and won. This year he wants to be Rincewind from the Terry Pratchett books. Red cape, cheap material from the offcut shop, fabric pen to write the spells on the cape, done! (or near enough, barring props).

  1. How do I MAKE a Fantastic Mr Fox costume.

  2. How do I do it for hardly any money - I have a budget of about £10!!

HELP!

(And can I just say once more, effing Jeffing World Jeffing Book day!)

(I'm also mid-packing to move!)

facepaint. facepaint is your friend. Get snazaroo as it's very good, and you can do special effects with it. Get pictures of said Mr fox and match the colours. All you need apart from facepaints is normal clothes (or pjs).

Oooops! I'll get the borad police after me! I thought this was chat!

AIBU to hate world book day.

AIBU to think that it is impossible to create an animal costume for £10 or less?!

Is that better?!

My boys both need to be Dickens characters. Dress them like dirty victorian tramps - Two Magwitchs.

But to your problem: in the film, Mr Fox wears corduroy. A lot of corduroy. See what you can get in charity shops and do face paint rather than make a head piece. You don't need to be an artistic genius with the facepaint, just heavy handed with the orange.

CardyMow · 23/02/2012 22:21

Ah - he can't USE facepaints - sensory issues.

He wants fur.

Fake fur is EXPENSIVE.

WHEN is world book day?

CardyMow · 23/02/2012 22:24

1st March.

How about these? Or a fox like hat?

glitch · 23/02/2012 22:29

fox hat

Does he know what fake fur feels like? It is a bit itchy. He may think it feels like cat or dog fur. My DS has ASD and can't go near the stuff with his sensory issues. Could give you an out for the fox!! [grni]

1st March? Can't be round here,as that is St David's day,so Welsh national costume for all and sundry. Maybe we are having it later- I think we got a note about it but I'm not sure where I put it.

Could you cut out or print out a fox mask from somewhere for him?

Our school is doing it next Friday. DD2 has to go as something to with The Sound Collector poems. One of the actual sounds. FFS.

Of which I, and as it turns out, DD2 know nothing. Brilliant.

every fecking year

CardyMow · 23/02/2012 23:25

Oh no, our school each dc has to come up with their choice of character, and MAKE the costume - bought things will not get any housepoints for it!!

I was thinking of getting cord clothes from the charity shops and attaching some fake fur to the top of the shirt, bottom of the trousers and cuffs of the top.

But that doesn't solve the problem of his FACE. How would you MAKE a 3-d (has to be 3-d to appease DS2 and avert meltdown) fox mask - that DOESN'T cover his mouth? Paint? That would avoid the need for fur on his face?

Could you get something made of fake fur from charity shop or kids craft fur stuff and stick ears and whiskers (made from pipe cleaners) on the mask?

I don't really know if foxes have whiskers, but they might do. Grin

Right. Get any old mask and papier mache a fox mask on top (stop below nose- this sort of shape). Orange/white tissue paper dipped in watered down PVA glue will work. Once dry, remove from mask. Paint if necessary. Or stick on some fake fur.
