to think that if someone calls you on your land line in the evening that they should at the very least be able to speak PLAIN english!! I am sick of getting calls and not being able to understand what they are calling about !!!

I work in a call centre and gave to speak to offshore colleagues daily and never have a problem, I honestly think some people programme their minds to not understand a call centre employee if they think they aren't British.

Yes sometimes you have to listen more carefully, but it doesn't hurt. Honest.

"I honestly think some people programme their minds to not understand a call centre employee if they think they aren't British."

I understand what you're saying, and yes sadly you may be right that some people just refuse to understand foreign accents. But while I do always try to understand what is said (obviously if someone rings me I want to know what they're saying) I've also had a minority of calls where I really could not understand the caller due to their poor English.

SP0104 · 23/02/2012 19:55

Our landline rings once then goes to message, if they are a genuine (sp) call they can leave a message and I will call back, if family want me they ring my mobile - and I never answer an unknown number on my mobile.

If I forget myself and answer the landline, when I they say can I speak to the homeowner/Mr x/Mrs x, I say "yes Ok" and disconnect the call

The foreigners don't bother me, the guy I had on the telephone tonight who called me darling and asked to speak to my husband pissed me right off though, he spoke with an easy to understand English accent. Twunt!

Apparently telephone preference doesn't apply to him as he wasn't selling me anything just trying to help me get my PPI back.

We got cold called at 11.30pm last night. I am so tired at the moment that I feel ill and my god, if I'd got to the phone before the answerphone picked up I'd have given them a mouthful Angry

parakeet · 23/02/2012 21:21

Most people find cold calling intensely annoying to start with. If the caller is hard to understand, I can understand that for some that's just the straw that breaks the camel's back.

It's irrelevant to me because as soon as I realise it's a sales call I gabble "Sorry, I'm not interested, please take me off your list" and put the phone straight down.

I would never be abusive to the caller. We should instead direct our anger at the laws that allow this to happen. Plus I fear they could somehow stick you on a list of "people who want calling back".

LIZS · 23/02/2012 21:25

TPS doesn't apply to overseas calls. I also had one guy, based in UK, the other day saying TPS doesn't apply to non-sales calls as he was offering me something for "free" Hmm Still get pc related and "survey" calls, and recently numerous solar energy calls which offer govt grnats

Filofax · 23/02/2012 21:43

I've had two calls today despite being registered with TPS (though I think you may have to reregister at some point). Caller opens by asking if I am Mrs Filofax and when I say yes the first started asking medical questions ?! I was taken back at being asked such things with being able to even hear what the company's name was,. The second caller demanded to know had I worked anywhere noisy, amongst other things. It was the insistence in both cases that rattled me, did end both calls very quickly. Sorry slightly off subject but needed to rant!

GoingForGoalWeight · 23/02/2012 22:36

Coffeedog made me laugh, ingenius idea :)

Portofino · 23/02/2012 22:40

I just put the phone down. Mind you I am in Belgium and rarely understand what they are going on about. There is a particularly persistent one trying to sell me cat food.
