To not want to move

mrsnw · 23/02/2012 10:06

We own a nice three bedroom mid terrace house in a good area with fab schools almost outright. Our mortage payments are less than £350 a month. I am a SAHM. Slap me please and tell me I do not need a detached three bed and a mortage almost double what we have. Just feels like all my friends have got so much bloody more grrrrrrr xx

We would stay in the same area and just buy somewhere bigger. My sons room is a box bedroom. You can just about fit a single bed a bookcase in it. Would be nice for him to have a bigger room. Oh and a downstairs toliet Grin

You're asking if YABU to not want to move.

But you write your post as if you do want to move.

I can't tell if YABU or YANBU until you clarify.

Do you want to move?

What is it that you want to know if it is unreasonable or not?

mrsnw · 23/02/2012 10:27

Go on slap slap. Why should I stay here? Thanks everlong. I need you right now to tell it to me straight Smile

I do want to move. But know that I don't really need to. If that makes senseConfused.

I can understand you wanting somewhere bigger if your third bedroom is really small. We used to live in a terraced house and, although it was nice to have a small mortgage and more disposable income, we did move because we wanted more bedroom space primarily, and a good size garden.

Surely it's not about the actual mortage amount, but if you can afford to pay more with your income (if you want to)?

For me, having less money left over every month was worth it to have more space for the children to play in their rooms, and a big garden for them to use in the summer. As long as you're not over stretching yourselves, why would that be a bad thing to do?

Although not sure why you're thinking you need to jump from a terrace to a detached - what's wrong with a semi? Then you'd still get the extra space but wouldn't be quite as expensive...

Trills · 23/02/2012 10:32

1 - are there actually any houses of the type you want available in the area you want?

2 - have you factored in moving costs?

3 - what would you have to give up that you have now in able to be able to afford it?

4 - you do realise that your current mortgage is tiny, don't you?

mrsnw · 23/02/2012 10:34

Yes we have been very lucky and not over spent but I guess we are outgrowing our house. Is it a good time to buy/sell?

OP posts:
badtasteflump · 23/02/2012 10:35

Sorry just realised you only wanted a slap Blush

badtasteflump · 23/02/2012 10:36

I would say it's never a bad time time to buy or sell as long as you're looking for long term family home and not just to make some quick cash..

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/02/2012 10:36

Could you pay your mortgage off a bit more quickly and then enjoy being mortgage free years before your friends. I bet they would be would be looking at you with the same Envy you are feeling now.

How old are your children? If they are very young then maybe moving for a bit more space makes sense as they are going acquire more crap as they get older. If one of them is likely to move out in the next 3-5 years maybe moving isn't really an issue.

Onlyaphase · 23/02/2012 10:38

Can you extend the ground floor? Convert the attic?
