To not understand the need for this "Graphic Content" warning

Warning DM link here I know I shouldn't read it because it does things like this but I need to rant about something sometimes...

The intro (sorry not sure what the proper term is) to this story on the DM's front page says "Warning Graphic Content" but I really don't understand why.

The women in these pictures are not anymore naked than we are used to seeing on the front of lads mags or in newspapers.

There are no open gaping wounds, just scars. Since when is looking at surgical scars so deeply disturbing that we need a warning. Especially when this same newspaper regularly features pictures of maimed or tortured people, or even dead bodies - normally also having been maimed or tortured - on the front page of the site.

Do we also need a "Graphic content" warning if we see a picture of a burns victim or someone who was born with a physical disability. In that case, CBeebies better add one to the start of programmes too. It's ridiculous.

Or, is it because it is art? Does it being "art" instead of just a picture make it more disturbing somehow? Yes the subject matter is heartwrenching and the portraits are haunting, but I do not feel offended or disgusted by them.

So AIBU (apart from reading the dm of course, I know I am BU for that!)?

I knew what this was about before I even read the OP.

The exact same thought ran through my head when I saw it. I saw it because I like to tut at the shite the DM peddles every day online my Mum forwarded me the link.

I have no idea why it has a graphic content warning. I can only presume that because they think the only thing worse than a picture of uncovered breasts is a picture of the abscence of them in their dreamworld DM ideal?

YANBU

Those women are incredibly brave

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 10/02/2012 20:10

It's to make more people look I think. It's sad but true that some people are more likely to look if there's a warning like that. I daresay it ups their "hits" on googe or something when people put certain search terms or something. Either that or they have actually thought "oh hang on, we're the DM, our readers so do love a nice complain, maybe we'd better put a warning on here just in case"

I also knew what this was about before I opened it.

I get that the images might be slightly shocking to people, but I don't think it's in a bad way at all. The graphic label is very weird.

I have complete admiration for those women.

Maybe because it is a graphic image of scarring? Lots of
People hate medical procedures and the thought of shudder being cut.

I would expect to see a graphic image
Warning on any photo featuring surgical or accident scarring regardless of sex

fans self and faints

Magneto · 10/02/2012 20:38

You see, I don't understand why it would be shocking at all, the scars have healed/are healing Maybe I've been desensitised (sp?) through tv and the internet and excessively graphic pictures of dead people shown by the dm without warning

I think these women are very brave and inspirational.

I did Grin

new favourite MNer Grin

I know and I think they are incredibly brave too but my mind is designed as such:

Scar
Means
Operation or accident
Means
Surgery
Means
needles
Means
breathe

Ack I know it's just a picture but I find the graphic warning quite helpful so I can steel myself I still look my therapist tells me too and I applaud those
Women and take nothing away from them.

But the graphic image warning helps iyswim.

Grin I think the fact these particular images are of women is besides the point actually as I would appreciate the warning on men too
