Those poor little girls! They will end up hating each other and/or their mother. How do the parents treat the winner/loser?

Why do they always look as if they are 30?

Callisto · 07/02/2012 13:29

Utterly, utterly ghastly and should be banned imo.

OffMeTrolley · 07/02/2012 13:33

no i dont like them either, but couldnt be arsed to worry enough to start a thread about it

shrugs

5Foot5 · 07/02/2012 13:33

Completely yuck!!

But, slightly OT, has anyone seen the film "Little Miss Sunshine" where a "normal" little girl wants to enter a beauty pagaent and is being coached for it by her Grandfather? The end is fabulous.

bakingaddict · 07/02/2012 13:37

Not sure i'd ban them but I wouldn't let my DD anywhere near one

For me they seem to affirm that a women's worth should be predominantly based on her appearance, I know people will say they also focus on academic acheivements but i've never seen any plain Janes win and why are the children so sexualised to look and act like adult women

Pandemoniaa · 07/02/2012 13:38

They are vile. Fortunately the worst elements of them seem to have stayed across the Atlantic. But they're hardly news are they? Although of course, this was a Daily Mail "story".

Kayano · 07/02/2012 13:39

Urgh put their bellies away!!

There seems to be a direct link between 'pageant kids' and 'alternative spellings
Of names'

I saw a toddlers and tiaras with a
'Siryniti' on it - pronounced serenity Confused

trustissues75 · 07/02/2012 13:41

I think, in theory, that they're awful things...I've watched a couple of documentaries on Sky (I had a train wreck moment...couldn't look away) but, the thing that disturbed me the most was the general attitudes of the little ones involved: a lot of them are brattly, self-involved etc etc which led me to believe that regular activity in such a pursuit was instilling bad values...I suppose if I'd seen a child pagent documentary where the children exhibited good values then I wouldn't be so horrified.

OTheHugeManatee · 07/02/2012 13:41

Freaky that these little girls are dressed in such an adult way. But also freaky that the kinds of adult women considered 'beautiful' in contemporary culture often look a bit like 6-year-olds with plastic tits on: tiny frame, huge head, big eyes set low down the face. Creepola in both directions Confused

MuffinTheMilf · 07/02/2012 13:41

5foot5 I love that film, going to see if the ending is on YouTube anywhere...

imoanruby · 07/02/2012 13:42

kayano really that's awful?! I have never seen Toddlers and Tiaras and don't think i want to!

fuckingvalentinesday · 07/02/2012 13:56

they seem to be catching on over here too what child ever really asks to do a beauty pagent. to me it just seems like pushy mothers reliving there youth and dreams desperate to be in the lime light.

Kayano · 07/02/2012 14:00

I only saw one episode and was like this Shock

Then I saw the spelling of her name

And I saw a pageant boy called Braxton. I was having BH at the time and was HmmConfused

ramblinrose · 07/02/2012 14:08

I will admit to watching Toddlers and Tiaras a few times Blush

It's the mothers on it that keep me hooked though.
They're quite unbelievable.

Kayano · 07/02/2012 14:10

The mother of siryniti was livid about the stylist having to do one one else's hair and her Dds hair was just
Not big enough. It's on in an hour... I think I will watch again Blush

Correctmeifiamwrong · 07/02/2012 14:22

I just got the pronunciation of Siryniti. Awful on both counts!

5Foot5 · 08/02/2012 13:27

When I think how hard it used to be, when DD was this age, to get her to sit still and not wriggle long enough for me to put her hair in plain ordinary pigtails, then the mind just boggles at how someone could get their DC to submit to this sort of thing.

seeker · 08/02/2012 13:30

Should be banned. Little Miss Sunshine is a wonderful film.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 08/02/2012 13:34

Loathesome things. I agree with 5Foot about hair. My DD is almost 11. She still won't brush her hair properly. The idea of rollers and laquer. Ha.

Scholes34 · 08/02/2012 13:38

Am going to watch Little Miss Sunshine again tonight. Excellent film.

cadelaide · 08/02/2012 13:41

I think they're rather fabulous.

Why not celebrate the beauty of little girls?

Correctmeifiamwrong · 08/02/2012 13:46

But they don't LOOK like little girls. They look like - heaven knows what!

AKissIsNotAContract · 08/02/2012 13:47

How is Siryniti pronounced?

Also love Little Miss Sunshine, great film.

Correctmeifiamwrong · 08/02/2012 13:48

I assume it is Serenity.

AKissIsNotAContract · 08/02/2012 13:49

Cadelaide: in the family photo they look like normal little girls, no more or less beautiful than any other child. It's not celebrating a child's beauty when they are plastered in make up, fake tan and hair extensions.
