Ok not an exciting AIBU but if anyone has a view please speak up?

Don't want to give the family food poisoning but it was qiute expensive (for us) and don't want to waste it unless absolutely necessary. Mis-read the use by when i bought it.....Smile Its in a vacuum pack thingy if that makes any difference......

Open and have a sniff! if it looks a bit slimey and a bit stinky, don't do it!

HuwEdwards · 31/01/2012 10:16

agree with hahhah. If it's off you will smell it

hermionestranger · 31/01/2012 10:18

Argh! Use your senses! If it smells off then don't use it!

My sister does this and it drives me INSANE!

Food doesn't know that a certain date has been reached and then decide to go off!

Sorry that was a bit harsh, but it's a pet peeve of mine!

AMumInScotland · 31/01/2012 10:19

If it smells ok when you open it, I'm sure it'll be fine. Fish isn't bad for food-poisoning, not like meat or shellfish which are more likely to set you off.

Thanks for the replies!

I feel ridiculous for asking tbh but I have been a vege for 28 years and although i can safely/happily cook meat and fish I am not confident with it if you know what i mean.

Its smoked fish so might be a bit harder to know if its off???

Maybe I will give DP an extra big portion and buy some fresh for the kids 9he has a cast iron stomach Smile!

It's smoked, it's vacuum packed, if it smells OK it will be perfectly fine. "Use By" does not mean "Poisonous After".

AuntingCarse · 31/01/2012 10:52

yy if it's smoked it will be fine.

WilsonFrickett · 31/01/2012 11:05

Och smoked is fine. That's how things were preserved in ye olden times, it'll be fine [nods wisely and gets out her pipe]

wahwahwah · 31/01/2012 11:53

Try on OH first. Or next door's cat (no not really! I love cats, I have had cats and not poisoned any of them)
