be given out to random entertainers. Why do entertainers get OBE's and CBE's etc for doing their job services to entertainment.

I can think of so many more ordinary people who do extraordinary work every day for little pay. Why don't they get honours?

Helena Bonham Carter
Jim Davidson
Bruce Forsyth

To name but a few

Hulababy · 28/01/2012 11:25

Sometimes they do.
Not sure how they get nominated.

Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 11:27

I know sometimes non famous people do but why do entertainers get honoured? Don't they get enough compensation and adoration for their work any how?

Ordinary people do get them. There's an office where people can nominate people from their community who they think deserve to be honoured. My nanna's friend and neighbour got one (I think an OBE but not sure) for her years of charity work. One of the groups she did a lot for nominated her. Every time they do them our local paper prints an article about the local people who've received something.

troisgarcons · 28/01/2012 11:29

Jim Davidson spent a lot of time travellign the world entertaining HM Forces in conflict zones.

RuleBritannia · 28/01/2012 11:35

Some of them do charity work eg Ian Botham who walked from Lands End to John o' Groats among other things he did. He was knighted.

ShellyBoobs · 28/01/2012 11:51

Jim fucking Davidson ????

That's disguisting. Angry

Ilovedaintynuts · 28/01/2012 11:55

Loads of 'normal' people get them. I know two people.
It wouldn't make the national press though would it as Edna the lollipop lady wouldn't interest anyone.
Jim Davidson is repulsive though. What a slime ball. Urgh.

Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 11:55

I agree some of them use their celebrity status to do some good but many don't.

Yes Jim Davidson has an OBE I think. I presume when he entertained the troops he didn't get paid?

OP posts:
Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 11:57

I know that normal do get them but it's normally when they have done something extraordinary.

However, you wouldn't get a nurse getting an OBE just because she's had a long career nursing would you? That really is my point.

Catherine Zeta Jones

Lorraine kelly

I agree with you. I dont mind entertainers getting honours if they have done extraordinary things, but it seems that some of them haven't done any more than do their jobs that they are well paid for.

Ordinary people do get honours, but it seems that the proportions are wrong. The percentage of ordinary people getting honours doesn't seem to far outweigh entertainers getting honours, and it should because there are more non famous people than there are famous people.

Archemedes · 28/01/2012 12:16

Why is Jim Davidson so hated? out of genuine interest.

O.T. Just the way it is I suppose.

Ilovedaintynuts · 28/01/2012 12:59

Err one of the people I know is a nurse who has had a distinguished career. She is considered to have gone beyond the call of duty. She is a hospice nurse and visits people on her day off etc.

Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 13:02

Jim Davidson is hated because his jokes are often made by having jibes at racial stereotypes.

OP posts:
Letchladee · 28/01/2012 13:11

Totally agree, I cannot see why celebrities (or anyone for that matter) gets an honour for just doing their jobs, unless they really do above and beyond the norm. I feel the same about university honoury degrees too.

troisgarcons · 28/01/2012 13:13

Jim Davidson - having met him on military tours - is an obnoxious, sexist pig BUT he was just a comedian of his time and as he's no longer on the telly, his brand of humour is shown to be past its sell by date. Cant put todays values on yesterdays circumstances.

What did Catherine Zeta Jones get one for? Marrying Michael Douglas?

Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 15:16

Zeta Jones got one for services to the film industry!!

Plenty of celebs have turned them down too. Benjamin Zephaniah and David Bowie have both turned them down.

Tee2072 · 28/01/2012 15:52

I personally know 3 ordinary people who have gotten them.

Anyone can be nominated, all it takes is a form filled out.

I've helped nominate one of the 3 who I know who have received them.

Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 15:52

So this is what he got his OBE from the Queen for

OP posts:
AKissIsNotAContract · 28/01/2012 15:54

Benjamin Zephaniah did a very good documentary discussing why he turned his down. The racist roots of the British empire were part of his reason. So it seems rather fitting that a racist like Jim Davidson would get one.

NiceViper · 28/01/2012 15:57

Jim Davison is hated by those who have not realised that his act has changed since the 1970s. What is castigated as racism now was mainstream then. Look at eg "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" for a very clear example of the BBC's output at the time; his early career was at the same time.

He is a mainstream comedian, who has done an enormous amount for Forces charities. But his act is indeed very much a reflection of working class tastes, so will probably remain subject to quite strident comment from some.

Hedgeblog · 28/01/2012 16:00

Akiss
It does indeed.

NiceViper that clip is from 2008
