Turkey thigh mince - Boak

shinyblackgrape · 28/01/2012 07:36

Took delivery of our shopping last night after a couple of glasses of wine. To be fair to the nice delivery man, im sure he explained the position but I didnt quite pick it up

However, I ordered some turkey mince and was given two packets of turkey thigh mince instead as substitutions. I said ok but only unpacked after he left. The mince looks not very appetising at all and only cost £2 per packet so I'm assuming it might have other not very nice things in it padding it out

Can anyone assure me it will taste ok? Only recipes I can find online are narco Pierre white ones but these are clearly ones he has been sponsored by Bernard Matthews to do so thinking it is not exactly his meat of choice. Other options are to bin it or to throw myself on waitrose's mercy and plead for a refund but they could quite rightly tell me to piss off

I don't want to waste ingredients making a spag Bol and it to be rank!

Oooops - I accidentally posted this here. So, to get some replies, please feel free to tell me:

AIBU not to check shopping/ to shop online/ to shop at waitrose/ to be drunk in charge of an Internet shopping delivery/ to order turkey mince in the first place etc etc

If you could also add in your views re the thigh mince too that would be much appreciated!

most probably will be fine - I always buy chicken thighs over breast as the meat is tastier and more tender.

hows about

turkey meatballs in tomato and fennel sauce

or

spicy meatballs

OneLittleBabyGirl · 28/01/2012 07:48

They are fine. My DH would only have turkey breast mince (not even thighs). And we use that for any mince recipes. Thighs taste more meaty than breast mice.

shinyblackgrape · 28/01/2012 07:49

I like the look of the spicy meatballs!

Thank you.

Well I get turkey thigh mince from sainsburys and it makes the best turkey burgers I've ever had. So YABU to boak at it but YADNBU for the drunk receiving of Internet shopping from waitrose Grin and I must say, as substitutions go, it's a pretty good one!

SiamoNellaMerda · 28/01/2012 07:50

It might look a bit boaky but it'll be fine. I'd spice it up a bit with some chilli flakes and oregano, salt & pepper etc and make a meatloaf with it. Good hot or cold. That's what I'd do if I found myself with turkey mince - which, thankfully, I don't!

mrstiredandconfused · 28/01/2012 08:30

Yabvu! Grin

Thigh mince is brilliant in homemade burgers (I hate any sort of ready made burgers, i like to know what is in them).

Mince, breadcrumbs, tomato puree, various herbs, S&P, bit of garlic and an egg or two depending on consistency, I prefer to grill but they are freeze-able as well. Can't beat them on a soft roll with salad and mayo.....

mrstiredandconfused · 28/01/2012 08:33

I should read before I post - NoWuckingFurries I completely agree!

squeakytoy · 28/01/2012 08:36

There will be more taste to the thigh mince than the breast mince, and just because it is cheaper doesnt mean it is inferior.

The darker meat actually tastes a lot better in a bolognese and looks better too.

HappyHoppyHippy · 28/01/2012 08:46

I never even knew this existed.....brilliant! Would it make a good alternative in lasagne?

DilysPrice · 28/01/2012 08:48

Yes it'll be fine in lasagne.

squeakytoy · 28/01/2012 08:49

it makes a fantastic meatloaf too..

NoWuckingFurries · 28/01/2012 08:52

It's ok mrstiredandconfused I assumed you were tired and confused Grin

And I use turkey mince in ragu, chilli or meatballs and it tastes lovely. I tend to do half turkey, have beef mince though for flavour and texture. Turkey mince has been a revelation in the Wucking household!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/01/2012 11:42

I use turkey thigh mince for anything that requires beef mince, can't tell the difference too much and its cheaper and healthier :)

Lambzig · 28/01/2012 11:48

I buy it to make turkey chilli - I think its nicer than the beef type one.

AdditionMultiplication · 28/01/2012 11:48

Turkey is cheaper and I often substitute for chicken breasts and the mince for beef mince. Just use the normal recipe.

DozyNosy · 28/01/2012 14:52

Should be fine so long as you remember to rinse your mince. Grin Sorry couldn't help it.

Actually I've found with most poultry thigh meat is much tastier than breast.

mumnotmachine · 28/01/2012 15:49

Thigh meat is MUCH nicer than breast meat, more meaty!!

mumnotmachine · 28/01/2012 15:50

Oh and in lasagne- try it with mushrooms leek and brocolli in a white sauce instead of tomato based
Yummy!!

mumnotmachine · 28/01/2012 15:52

Although the breast mince is more pleasing to the eye in lasagne as I described above, the thigh mince tends to be more brownish looking

HappyHoppyHippy · 28/01/2012 16:54

Oooh yum! Will try that
