AIBU to be pissed off with Masterchef narration?

I never marked myself as an ardent feminist - can't be arsed really - but tonight's Masterchef pissed me off. The test was to serve a meal to previous Masterchef winners, all men bar one. The men were identified by the work they had done in Michelin-starred restaurants, the sole woman as "new mum so and so". Why is that relevant? Surely she was a previous winner on her cooking ability, not her capacity for giving birth?
Similarly the bio of one the contestants mentioned that she cooked "for her 3 sons". Don't any of the male contestants have children?
I HATE the way women are identified as "mum of so and so" or "mother of how many". Judge me on my professional abilities please, not on by fecundity.
Rant over!

Surely they do their own biography? I wouldhave loved to have tried that ravioli.

YusMilady · 24/01/2012 22:28

I always assume they provide their own biographies.

Maybe she just wanted to show off her perfect, adorable DD on tv? I don't suppose they forced her at gunpoint, that baby was beautiful Grin They never mentioned Claire's baby at all so it probably was that they did their own "bit" and put what they wanted in it.

RillaBlythe · 24/01/2012 22:29

Didn't it say 'new mum of one runs her own restaurant'?

Have to say I do always notice the gender imbalance.

dementedma · 24/01/2012 22:40

but *rilla" why couldn't it say "runs her own restaurant". Why is the "new mum" bit relevant?
although, if they write their own, fair enough. I pointedly refuse to mention whether I have DCs or not on any sort of business profile. it's got nothing to do with my professional ability. I HATE it at networking events where some simpering female asks me if I have DCs ....WTF has that got to do with bidding for this contract etc? Do you ask the men in the room "so, do you have DC's?"

I missed the first half but was it Thomasina Miers? She is better known than the rest of them put together, so many viewers will have known who she is by reputation. It may well have been her choice...

civilfawlty · 25/01/2012 00:15

Yep. Pissed me off too. Stuck out as totally bizarre.

Valpollicella · 25/01/2012 00:17

Did they point out that Claire was also anew (ish) mum?
