Just said that he thinks Child Benefit for higher earners should be cut, and then he went, incredulously "I mean, I get child benefit! It's nuts!"

AIBU in thinking that you don't get CB unless you actually apply for it?
You don't have to apply for it if you don't need it, do you?

OP posts:
Kayano · 23/01/2012 10:55

I thought you just got it but I'm ignorant and childless ATM

Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 10:56

Shock schofield gets cb, wtf I thought you had to apply as well

aldiwhore · 23/01/2012 10:57

Its automatically your right to have it, but you do need to give account details etc., to activate it. So if you don't need it, don't give them your details!

I HATE the fact its called Child Benefit the old Family Allowance just sounded a lot 'nicer'.

newbiedoobiedoo · 23/01/2012 10:58

In ROI it comes automatically to you, maybe the same in UK?

blondie80 · 23/01/2012 11:00

You do have to apply for it, generally you get the forms when registering your childs birth from the registrar, that doesn't mean that you have to actually claim it.

Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 11:01

Right now I am over the shock, I meant to say yes you do have to apply, you don't automatically get it, you have to send the birth certificate to prove you had a child

NorthernWreck · 23/01/2012 11:02

Yeah, thats what I thought. Apprently Ol' Phil puts his kids CB in a trust fund for them. "It really adds up" he says.

Maybe if people who are proper rich and on the telly stopped claiming CB they wouldn't have to cut it?

Come on Phil, do the right thing mate.

OP posts:
JaneMare · 23/01/2012 11:03

I don't think Philip Schofield does get CB

his wife otoh...

aldiwhore · 23/01/2012 11:04

I don'tblame him for doing this, but I think it does take the piss when you claim it and then say it should be cut for higher earners. Keep schtum. Silly man.

Kayano · 23/01/2012 11:05

I actually think he is right and they should cut it for the v wealthy... I mean they don't 'need' it but
As its there is is right that he claims it iyswim.

ReneeVivien · 23/01/2012 11:06

Maybe he could donate it to the Family Welfare Association or the Child Poverty Action Group.

Thingumy · 23/01/2012 11:07

it will give him something else to talk about on twatter.

NorthernWreck · 23/01/2012 11:08

But kayano, he has free will! Just because he can doesn't mean he should!

Good idea Renee. Or he could donate it to meee

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 11:09

I agree that's a good idea renee

Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 11:10

Northern you best be sharing it around if he does Grin

NotnOtter · 23/01/2012 11:11

Pretty sure his kids are too old!

Kayano · 23/01/2012 11:11

So do all the other rich bankers/ tv presenters and slebs...

Do we
Think Phillip is the only one claiming it who doesn't need it?

My point it he is doing nothing wrong
And one token gesture
From one sleb won't make that much different.

If its unneeded by the wealthy, why have it? People will claim it! Ofc they will. It's pointless to say 'do the right thing phil' when he has every right to.

Therefore it should be cut
For high earners

NorthernWreck · 23/01/2012 11:12

It gets on my tits, cos there must be a lot of wealthy people around going "ooh, it's disgusting all these people on benefits" and they themselves-on benefits!
Gah!

OP posts:
NorthernWreck · 23/01/2012 11:13

OK tiredmummy 60/40 Grin

OP posts:
LadyBeagleEyes · 23/01/2012 11:14

I remember a celebrity a few years ago (it may have been Muriel Grey) who got CB and gave it to charity.
Does Phil really keep his?
He should be ashamed.

Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 11:17

Oooo northern you drive a hard bargain, it's a deal Grin

MidnightinMoscow · 23/01/2012 11:17

Yep, he could always donate it to charity if he thinks he shouldn't receive it.

Oh, but in the same piece we got to hear about Carole Malone's ideas on Nursing and the NHS. What a treat that was...Hmm

Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 11:19

As far as I can find out his kids could be 15 and 18.

Apparently he is ambassador to kidscape

Flisspaps · 23/01/2012 11:21

Don't watch it. I stopped watching it when the delightful Kelvin Mackenzie seemed to be on it every day.

It's revolutionised my life. Well, I've stopped spending £1 a week on their competitions anyway.

NorthernWreck · 23/01/2012 11:22

I know Fliss, I am sitting here hating myself, but it's still on! I really need to get back to work! Damn This morning and MN
