Angry.
i have held off booking our holiday in feb for ages, kept an eye on the prices weekly and hedged my bets.
Last week the prices went up from £592 from cardiff to £630, i then checked bristol and that had gone up to £590 from £579. When i went to book it online it said 'hurry one room left'.
So i booked from bristol at £590.
They then went up to £640 from bristol.

Just looked now and it is £470 Shock Angry how can they do that? Surely if prices are going up its for a reason, even the travel agent said it was because the seats on the plane we getting low! How can they just drop it £120pp. Thats £240 we could have saved

I've found that when booking flights with Ryanair or Aer Lingus. A couple of years ago, I paid over ?1000 for flights for 5 of us - only for the same flights to drop to ?400 a few weeks later! It's like taking a gamble when you book these things.

NickNacks · 17/01/2012 21:04

The more you check the same booking the more interested they know you are so they edge the prices up. Happened to us when we kept umming and ahhing over two package holidays.

lady007pink · 17/01/2012 21:05

I came to the conclusion it's because the seats/holidays might not be selling as fast when they get to a certain price, so the price is drastically lowered to kickstart more bookings.

lady007pink · 17/01/2012 21:06

NickNacks, I've read that about some tour operators, apparently if you clear your cookies the prices change. I've tried this and it didn't work!

thenightsky · 17/01/2012 21:09

I think the number of internet 'hits' they get affects price. I've had this happen loads of times when trying to book hotel rooms... worst lot are Best Western, Travelodge and Premier Inn.

Last Sunday I check Premier Inn in location I need to be in Feb... £29. So I went into work Monday morning, checked again.. still £29. Booked my time off work and went back to computer to book room... bastards had changed the price to £61 Shock It also said 'only one room left' so I booked it at £61. Next day I looked again.. now £31.

It's like bloody roulette.

suburbophobe · 17/01/2012 21:09

I've noticed that too.

They track your computer and then put up the price.

mumatron · 17/01/2012 21:09

We've booked a holiday for june this year. We were advised to hold off booking a seat for dd on the plane as the prices will go down. We were given a price of £350 when we booked.

Checked again yest and it's now £550 for an 18 month old to have her own seat.

mosschops30 · 17/01/2012 21:12

I dont think they should be allowed to put 'hurry only 1 room left' and then its blatently not true! Its mis-selling.
Its not to do with checking cos ive still been looking at the prices daily so on that idea they shouldve gone up not down

OP posts:
fivegomadindorset · 17/01/2012 21:13

I think you have to clear your cookies.

StarbuckIzzy · 17/01/2012 21:16

An 18 mth old has to have their own seat and the seat price isn't based on age it's based on the seat price. Whoever told you it would definitely go down in price was wrong, although it may have been likely it's never guarenteed!

Op there is no point being annoyed. It's all about supply and demand, perhaps another airline just released new seats or chartered a new flight for the same day to the same destination, your airline now has competition so needs to reduce their prices. Or perhaps they've not sold as many as they'd planned so decided to reduce their prices. You can't be annoyed with Thomson, holidays go up and down, it's a risk you take- sometimes you get a real bargain, sometimes you pay a higher price and see it lower later. You must have been happy at the time with the price you paid else Im assuming you not have paid it and looked elsewhere for another holiday instead.

mosschops30 · 17/01/2012 21:19

I wasnt happy about the price, it was more than we paid last year. We were unflexible because we wanted to stay in a particular hotel, the only one in the resort so no option and particular dates. But i booked because after months of watching prices were going up and up

OP posts:
NickNacks · 17/01/2012 21:22

I didn't even think to try and clear the cookies tbh Blush

Hulababy · 17/01/2012 21:23

Starbuck Izzy - isn;t it at 2y when a child needs their own seat, so an 18m can sit on parent's lap.

roses2 · 17/01/2012 21:26

I had this problem too at Christmas! I took print screens and to be honst I am thinking of reporting them to the advertising agents. They should not be allowed to advertise "only xx left" then add more the following week.

CervixWithASmile · 17/01/2012 21:30

Babies / toddlers are safer in their own seat though, even if more expensive.

thenightsky · 17/01/2012 21:33

I think they would get around the 'Only one room left' thing by adding in tiny-tiny print somewhere 'at this price'.

roses2 · 17/01/2012 21:46

They added small print stating "we may decide to add more at a later date". Nothing at all about price in their t&c's.

WTF? If Apple did this with ipads at Christmas, there would be hell to pay and it would be all over the paper. It's a plane. There are only x many seats, they can't just decide to add more seats at a later date.

mosschops30 · 17/01/2012 22:05

Im going to ring them tomorrow, what can i say without sounding too whiney?
We book with them every year and i just feel a bit let down. I can understand if you look at prices and then months later they change, thats how it goes and we usually book early, but this is less than a week the price has gone up £50 then down £120.

I might get them to add seating together if im lucky Smile

OP posts:
mumatron · 18/01/2012 11:35

mosschops have you rung them?

the age limit is a years for a child to have their own seat but I would rather her have her own seat for a 4 hour flight. The price per person for the holiday is only £505, so the price for one seat is more than the holiday costs for us. insane.

VonHerrBurton · 18/01/2012 13:08

mumatron whoever gave you the advice that the price would go down nearer the time for dd is a crazy person.

What if the flight's full when you decide to book? or price goes up to £800? You (presumably) won't be leaving her at home, so you will be held to ransom and have to pay it, regardless of price???

Madness.

mumatron · 18/01/2012 13:24

i thought that, I'm not that concerned about not getting her a seat. I just know she is going to be sat on our lap the whole time anyway and I'd rather save the money for duty free but Dp is convinced she will need her own seat.

the chances of her sleeping are nil. I just hate being told shitty lies by people obviously trying to make money off me.

Sandalwood · 18/01/2012 14:02

I wonder if some companies do that tracking you/cookies thing through Amazon too as I've had that recently with an item I was showing DH. It went to 'just one left in stock' and the price went up I bought it and it doesn't seem to have sold out anyway.

mosschops30 · 18/01/2012 14:18

Yes i rang them spoke to some smart arsed little toad at head office who was no use, then ramg the shop and the girl was lovely and sympathetic but said she has no control over internet prices and i didnt want to have a go at her, its not her fault.
Anyway the only thing we can do is that if the cardiff prices drop we can change our holiday fir £50pp, which would be worth it as we would still save £144, so just keeping an eye on it now.

OP posts:
mumatron · 18/01/2012 15:52

mosschops I have noticed lately the prices between cardiff and bristol have been massive. The holiday we booked was almost £300 cheaper if we flew from bristol. Even with petrol and the toll for the bridge we save a fortune.

Madness

mosschops30 · 18/01/2012 16:11

I think its something to do with the charges that cardiff airport impose on airlines. I prefer bristol tbh, the parking is great and they have starbucks Grin its a much better airport
