I've only ever noticed it used in a sarcastic way. It's totally unnecessary in a genuinely helpful post.

Perhaps that's because I tend to notice passive aggression as I dislike it so much, and people do tend to see (and remember) what they expect to see.

It only seems to be used sarcastically on this board... I post on another board all the time and on there its always taken at face value.
