Bah Humbug, I am not even religious these days, but it is Christmas!!!!!!

We do not celebrate the birth of X, X did not have the best selling book of all time written about X and when we are annoyed we don't even say Jesus H X!

So please, please, let Christmas be Christmas.

YANBU where did X come from anyway Xmas Confused

ElizabethDarcy · 20/12/2011 07:56

I dislike 'Xmas' too. Love CHRISTmas!!! Xmas Grin

TanteRose · 20/12/2011 07:59

Xmas is an abbreviation for Christmas. It is derived from the word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, transliterated as Christos, which is Greek for Christ. Greek is the language in which the whole New Testament was written.

Originally, Xmas was an abbreviation where the X represents the Greek letter chi, which is the first letter of Christ's name. However, because of the modern interpretations of the letter X, many people are unaware of this and assume that this abbreviation is meant to drop Christ from Christmas.

HTH

YANBU Xmas makes no sense really either!

TanteRose · 20/12/2011 08:00

TanteRose · 20/12/2011 08:01

I thought everyone knew that Confused

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 20/12/2011 08:02

No, I have never heard that. To be honest I think most people drop the Christ because they are lazy.

Me too but was told off by a christian the other day for using Xmas. I informed him of the Greek letter x and the like and he said 'well you have your beliefs and I have mine' it's not a 'belief' it's a fact. My beliefs have naff all to do with it.

Sirzy · 20/12/2011 08:03

I know where it comes from but still have an irrational hatred of it - I blame my primary school teacher who referred to it as "crossing out Christ" so since then I always write it in full which isn't hard anyway!

LadySybilPussPolham · 20/12/2011 08:05

ahh. Thought you were just being grumpy Blush

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 20/12/2011 08:07

My dad was a fIrm believer in keeping Christ in Christmas, so my hatred of X was started young. It just feels wrong to write X, you don't say X, so for 99.9 per cent of people are missing the point by using X, not reflecting the Greek derivation of the word.

What we celebrate at this time of year is actually a roman/pagan winter feast hijacked by christians (if you really want to be pedantic). So it's Xmas for me as it isn't anything to do with Christ.

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 20/12/2011 08:24

Hairy (great name!) I will allow pagans to drop the Christ, though I do wonder why they choe to call their winter festival Xmas? Co-incidence?

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 08:29

I use xmas because I'm too lazy to type or write christmas

Rudolfsgottarednose · 20/12/2011 08:59

"why they choose to call their winter festival Xmas? Co-incidence?"

I'm not celebrating the birth of Christ, but i want my children to culturally fit in and now that they are old enough they can believe in what they choose to, so i don't mention my own beliefs until i am asked. There are cultural celebrations that we all take part in, not only religous ones.

I am having a winter festival, as far as i am concerned. I do the same level of celebration at Easter, but not because of the rising of Christ.

lisad123 · 20/12/2011 09:03

Wouldnt worry yourself too much, they have wrong date for Jesus birth anyways. They changed it to dec 25th to fit in with the pagen winter celebrations anyways.
