to have stormed out in a huff?

I go to a ladies only gym circuit thing (Curves). It is a very basic gymn, no shower etc. And a quick half hour circuit. It works well for me and is very effective and quick.
But theire opening hours drive me mad. They close from 2-3:30 in the week which is always tight for me to fit my half hour in at lunchtime. And only open 9-12 on a sat and not at all on a sunday.
I try to squeeze half hour in at 11:30 on a sat and race there from dropping my daughter off. If I am a bit late I just do whatever I can fit in before they close at 12pm.
Today I got there just before 11:40. When I got there the staff member on winged that it was 20 to 12, and she had to be somewhere AT 12. She had switched everything off, the computerised system, the log in system, the music, the circuit timer etc.
I said that I would just do till 12 and she kept arguing that it wouldnt record it blah blah. If she had just let me race in I would have got a good 400 cals burned.
In the end I just stormed out without doing it.
I am cross, they close at 12pm. If you close at 12 then thats when you close not at 20 to, and you cant expect to be somewhere at 12, you can expect to leave at 12. If I want to arrive at 5 to 12 and do 5 minutes then surely that is my right. As it was I had a good 20 minutes and could have done 2/3 of a workout.
I have looked online and there is another branch about 10 minutes further away that is open 8-8.

get to the other branch then Grin

G1nger · 17/12/2011 12:54

She wad rude and I agree with you. I've been known to complain about a hotel gym that closed 5 mins early...

tigermoll · 17/12/2011 12:55

YANBU to be miffed that the staff member had closed up early, and so prevented you from doing your workout.

If I were you, I would transfer to the other branch, and drop your branch a letter explaining why you've left them.

SanTEEClaus · 17/12/2011 13:00

Complain to the manager and/or corporate.

I looked at joining a Curves gym once and was confused by the opening hours. Are they not generally open in the evenings? The gyms that I've been to before have all opened late in the evening, some were even 24 hours.

GoingForGoalWeight · 17/12/2011 15:56

YANBU - do not go back, write letter of complaint ask for refund or other compensation. It feels as if you wasted your time and her actions are unprofessional, I'd be peed off too.

Workout from a Youtube video for today etc.

Good luck :)

tbh it sounds like way more hassle than it's worth. I'm a member of a Nuffield gym - it's fairly decent - £34 a month and open around 7 till 9 weekdays and 8 to 8 weekends. I couldn't be doing with lunchtime closings, no showers etc.

calamityboo · 17/12/2011 17:09

YANBU, i would have done the same thing, you are right to assume that 12 closing means that the centre will close at 12 and up to that point the centre is fully open and available to use, compaints to the manager is a must!! It might be worth trying the other centre to see if the extra travel time works out for you.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 17/12/2011 17:11

that's very annoying
I left my gym (LA fitness) because the staff would go round turning everything off 30 mins before they closed. Was most annoying

Angelico · 17/12/2011 17:13

No not at all. Definitely make a complaint and ask to be refunded the cost of a one-off session. If they create any fuss write to head office and tell them why you are leaving them - poor opening hours, poor staff attitude etc. It's a service you're paying for. And obviously - join another gym!

HeidiKat · 17/12/2011 17:14

I would look at cancelling the membership and joining your local council gym if a basic gym is all you need. The receptionist was rude and unreasonable, I haven't worked in a gym but I have worked in a shop and if someone wanted to come in 5 minutes before closing time to do 5 minutes worth of shopping we couldn't tell them to piss off as we wanted to leave on time, the till gets switched off and the door shut at the designated closing time and not before.
