After this one obviously.

MN are dependent on thread starters to generate debate and keep ideas going.

Quite frankly, I feel that with the new FB button, any ideas or threads I generate will be more for the commercial gain of MNHQ than the collective interest of MN users.

I've got a great idea for a new chat thread, but, sorry, I'm not posting it at the moment.

You are a truly missing out. It might have made classics.

Dont really see the difference. Before the "like" button, there was always the ability to paste the link onto your facebook wall anyway..

Feminine · 16/12/2011 01:37

I've seen a couple of threads like this.

op why are people up in arms?

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 16/12/2011 01:42

No, doesn't matter :) just wondered ~Thank you!

DisTwinkleyMincePies · 16/12/2011 01:51

I don't want people to know who I am on here - I like being mysterious. Why do we have to share through fb? Why?

KateMiddlet0n · 16/12/2011 02:05

YABU. Don't click it. Problem solved.

DisTwinkleyMincePies · 16/12/2011 02:50

Katie Shock

I thought at least you'd start a survey about it! unless Justine has nobbled you in advance with the HQ Biscuit tin...

Fudge and macadamia cookie?
Pecan and ginger icecream?

Maltesers?

Xmas Grin
Millicano · 16/12/2011 04:47

I think what is important to remember here is that it is not just q question of dont click on it. I dont even have blardy facebook, but anyone else who clicks the link will have it on their facebook and someone could identify you .

This is just a cheap and nasty way of drumming up more business.

flamegirl77 · 16/12/2011 05:58

I don't understand. If I start a thread and someone 'likes' it then how on earth will anyone know that 'flamegirl77' is 'realname mcrealname?' Confused

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/12/2011 06:07

MNHQ have been linking to threads on FB (and twitter I believe though I don't use the latter) for years (well if feels like years - maybe just a year or two) . They have 12,000 people that 'like' them on FB.............that's 12,000 people potentially clicking through to threads here on MN............

The media have been telling people what we're talking about for years, people have been 'sharing' on FB (even before the 'easy' option we now have) threads, people have been stubmling upon MN threads via google (DS1 found a chocolate cake recipe the other week googling and ended up on here!)

KateMiddlet0n · 16/12/2011 09:00

disTwinkly sorry no survey for the FB button but there will be a Christmas survey!

HeidiKat · 16/12/2011 09:13

I can't even see the facebook button but I'm on the mobile site so maybe that's why.

Trills · 16/12/2011 09:35

Do what you like. Just stop starting threads about it.

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 16/12/2011 09:37

To repeat FellatioNelson's great quote:

FB is full of total wankers and unfortunately some people are not remotely discening about who they 'friend'. It will draw attention to certain threads that will attract the wrong kind of new members(as we experienced after all the publicity with Riven) who will be all over the board like cockroaches. Not a pleasant thought.

crazycrackernanna · 16/12/2011 09:40

Oh so if you like something on MN it links to a posters RL facebook page/name? Is that it?

redlac · 16/12/2011 09:44

flamegirl they won't know its you

millianco why shouldn't mn drum up more business? its not a bloody charity or a private members club!

redlac · 16/12/2011 09:46

linerunner - ANY type of publicity MN gets might attract wankers (as experienced after Riven) FB didn't bring all those wankers on here the media did. MN is searched by Google and anyone on the net can read what people post on here. I'm surprised at the level of misunderstanding about the internet people have on MN

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 16/12/2011 09:49

But I always liked MN precisely because it seemed to show a liking of and a responsibility towards its members. This just seems to give the wankers a much more convenient routemap and route in.

redlac · 16/12/2011 09:54

but the wankers have always had that ability for find threads on mumsnet - heck the Daily Mail & Matthew Wright are like walking adverts for MN!

At the end of the day, MN is a business which needs to say they have x number of members and x number of page views per day to get the advertisers in. Its a false sense of security that MN 'like and feel responsible towards its members' its a discussion board/website to make money

EdithWeston · 16/12/2011 09:57

If there is no additional functionality, then the button is useless. It can be removed with zero effect.

So then everyone is happy - those who want to link can continue to do so. Those who don't, don't have it in their face.

It's an obvious, logical and easy solution.

If it is not adopted, then ask why? Perhaps that button isn't so benign? Perhaps increased linking is something MNHQ wants to see?

After all, why isn't it active on some forums, unless they are being offered an additional "protection" against facile linking?

Please could there be a proper user poll on this?

redlac · 16/12/2011 09:59

Of course increased linking is something MNHQ wants to see! They need new members, page views, links to bring in the advertisers and investors.
