My personal grump is that Father Christmas has been imported, yes some years ago, into Europe from guess where. Father Christmas wears a short red jacket, white trimming, with a black belt and red trousers usually tucked into black boots. His hat is a red bobble hat with a bit of white trimming.

Santa Claus (St Nicholas) is European and wears a long red 'dressing gown' without a belt and with a hood attached to the 'dressing gown'. This is the one from my childhood but Christmas in this country has been so commercialised that we are drowned in Father Christmas.

AIBU to want Santa Claus rather than Father Christmas?

don't really care one way or the other!

YANBU to want whatever you want. I like red. I like Father Christmas/American Coke Santa, and I like the stories about the ole Saint Nic and his green dressing gown.

What I love most about Christmas is that you can do it any which way you like! Its such a mish mash of stories and traditions, all of them relevant, from the Christian story to the pagan roots, Northern Eurpean traditions, to Americanisation (it wouldn't be Christmas without ELF) its my idea of an almost perfect celebration.

If bits get added over the years, or changed, or put aside, then it really doesn't matter in general. The only thing that matters is that you celebrate the way you wish (or don't celebrate at all) and that the over riding message is one of love, peace, goodwill to all people.

The English 'Father Christmas' originally wore a lush green gown .... see Dickens 'A Christmas Carol' for details. Isn't there a story that Coca Cola put him in red so it matched their logo? Each to their own.... you dress him how you like, and others can do the same. :)
