Debating the Santa/Father Christmas/St. Nick/Whatever situation?

My word! With alarming regularity, every time I open mumsnet in the morning there is yet another "AIBU to love/hate the Santa Claus myth?"

Why don't we just officially say that some of us love the Santa myth for a number of reasons, and joyfully perpetuate it with our offspring. Others of us despise the myth for a number of reasons, and happily have our children live in reality. Still others of us don't particularly love or hate the myth, and will either perpetuate it or not because in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter.
There is no right or wrong answer. What one person does is not better than someone who makes a different choice.

And I am placing my bets on at least another 5 "Santa love/hate" threads.

I agree. It's never bloody ending and I'd like to know why it exercises the minds of some people quite so much?

squeakytoy · 15/12/2011 09:44

At a guess.... plenty more until at least the end of January Grin

ShowOfHands · 15/12/2011 09:44

They'll only be replaced with threads about loving/hating snow.

ThisIsANickname · 15/12/2011 09:45

ShowOfHands I bloody hate the snow and could kill it with fire (literally, as it were).

people just need to realise that in England you use Father Christmas and in Scotland/NI we use Santa Claus

Do you all get upset and say "I hate the word wean instead of child"?

squeakytoy · 15/12/2011 09:53

I am looking forward to all the ones that will start by 3pm on Christmas Day.

MIL wrapped DC's present in the "wrong type of wrapping paper"

AIBU to want to stab my DH for having a hangover on Xmas Day

PIL bought my DC pink toys.. how very dare they?

MIL has insulted me by buying me the most inappropriate present

RainboweBrite · 15/12/2011 09:57

We are in England, and we usually say Santa Claus, redlac, so a bit of a sweeping statement there!

redlac · 15/12/2011 10:00

I'm only going by responses on this thread RainboweBrite www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1363657-to-loathe-Santa?msgid=28999620

aldiwhore · 15/12/2011 10:02

Father Santa Christmas Claus. Problem solved.

Hullygully · 15/12/2011 10:04

We say Father Santa

or that fat bloke in red.

EdithWeston · 15/12/2011 10:05

Father Christmas is the old English version with roots in the pagan Yule (he's a variant of the Green Man).

So whereas it's wrong to say all English people embrace their uniquely English heritage, it is right to say it's a name only used areas of UK.

TroublesomeEx · 15/12/2011 10:06

Spend a day in a Birmingham school and then tell me you prefer the name 'Santa'. Wink

pinkyp · 15/12/2011 10:07
