When are you told you've failed a trading standards test purchase?

I know not strictly an AIBU but this gets the most traffic. My friend is a bit worried as she served a customer last night who had some alcohol. She didn't I.D. them but when the person left the checkout she started to doubt herself. She is worried it was a trading standards test purchase. Nothing was said to her the rest of the shift.

Does anyone know if trading standards come in right after the test purchase to say you've failed or do they wait a few days before telling the shop ?

This happened to me - they came straight back in after the transaction, police in tow, who dragged me off my til and finger printed me in front of the whole shop while I cried my eyes out. She'd know ALL about it, so tell her not to worry.

And ALWAYS I.D.

Did the person who bought the alcohol look of age?

DoesNotGiveAFig · 13/12/2011 15:24

Me or the OP? In my case, they did. Large chain supermarket opposite a halls of residence too, so lots of alcohol buying etc.

Kid was 15.

catpark · 13/12/2011 15:25

Thanks, will let her know. She usually does ask but started second guessing herself. When her store does an in-store test they don't get told for a while so she thought trading standards would be the same.

Na, they LOVED every minute of humiliating me and treating me like a common criminal. Didn't get fired though which was nice.

old I'm not sure what you mean by your comment - are you implying that we would knowingly sell alcohol to an underage person?

Obvs the OP made her judgement call, thought them old enough, put it through, then afterward started to doubt herself. The very fact she's worrying says she wouldn't do it on purpose.

It's tiring and monotonous being on a till, you have to make the call, and unfortunately in my case it was the wrong one. I didn't say "wahey, lets sell some booze to underage kids today!"

catpark · 13/12/2011 15:35

My friend initially thought they did. He was with an older woman who had her own basket of shopping and after he paid he said bye to the woman and walked out. Then the older woman bought her stuff. She thought it was a bit strange and started to worry that the woman was the person that occompanies the underage person.

oldlady it wasn't me that served them it was my friend. I work in a different branch. We only know that trading standards do a test purchase from time to time but we haven't been told if you find out if you've passed/failed after the purchase or much later.

No, sorry, not meaning to suggest anyone deliberately sold to an under-aged person! My Ds used to do decoy work for the local trading standards, he had to be of age but looked underage, that's all.

So if the purchaser looked of age, they probably weren't on a sting.

sheepgomeep · 13/12/2011 15:43

This is why many retailers now have an age 25 policy. You have to look over the age of 25 to buy an age restricted product. It protects the retailer and the person serving as there is less room for error.

It still hasnt stopped me from having many moments on the till though. wondering whether Ive served someone I shouldnt!

Horrible dready feeling

pigletmania · 13/12/2011 16:00

Well if the person looked like this I would definitely not Grin
