to sack my cleaner - missing credit card

smashupyourtvset · 12/12/2011 21:40

I've just noticed my credit card is gone from my wallet. I only ever use it online (use debit card in shops).

Last time I used it was to xmas shop online 10 days ago. I haven't seen it since (though assumed it was in my wallet).

Since then the cleaner has been (without me being in). I am thinking I must have left the credit card by the computer and the cleaner might have taken it.

Of course I can't be sure but can't think what else could have happened to it as haven't had it out.

I can't face confronting cleaner as obviously no evidence but now I feel uneasy so should I sack her?? She has cleaned for me for around a year now and no real problems (though a bit of a slacker, arriving late, leaving early etc - though I haven't mentioned the slacking to her as too much trouble to find someone else and she does a reasonable job in the time she does work).

Seems harsh without any evidence.
Presumably you have cancelled the card?

smashupyourtvset · 12/12/2011 21:42

I will cancel it tomorrow - just noticed it gone tonight!!

Not really enough evidence to pin it on her. You'd BU to sack her.

Have you cancelled the card? Any purchases been made on it?

rookiemater · 12/12/2011 21:42

Phone up the credit card company. Find out if it has been used, if so go to the police. If it has been taken by her then they should be able to confirm.

However it may be possible that it was taken by someone else from your wallet when out, so find out the facts before you take any further action.

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 12/12/2011 21:43

You need to cancel it now, not tomorrow. Are you sure you haven't just lost it? Poor cleaner being sacked just before christmas with no evidence.

PippiLongBottom · 12/12/2011 21:44

Why the fuck would you jump to that conclusion. I lost my card today briefly, I don't have a cleaner so maybe I should have sacked one of my children or my dog?
I found it in my coat pocket.

smashupyourtvset · 12/12/2011 21:45

I keep it in a zipped pocket when out and I carry cash - wouldn't a thief take that as well? I just feel really uneasy having someone in my home now.

No purchases have been made on it.

Soupqueen · 12/12/2011 21:46

Cancel your card now, most companies have 24 hour lines for lost and stolen.

I'd be very, very wary of sacking your cleaner though. Are you absolutely sure thats the only thing that could have happened?

I couldn't find my cc today, I'm probably a lot more careless than you though.

smashupyourtvset · 12/12/2011 21:46

I left my wallet on the sideboard as well - she could have removed it from there. I just can't think where it could have gone otherwise.

Now, when that poster lost her ring and accused the ntl guy to his bosses and the police, where did it turn out to be in the end?

Not in the possession of the ntl guy...

Phone the credit card company and see what is happening with the card.

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 12/12/2011 21:46

you can cancel a card 24/7 so do it now.

It is probably somewhere in the house, tbh. But better to cancel it.

However, you simply cannot label someone a thief on this little evidence. It's really more likely that it's slipped down the side of the desk or been moved than it is that she stole it.

microserf · 12/12/2011 21:47

you're just assuming it's your cleaner, you have no evidence. if no purchases have been made, couldn't it just be lost?

hellhasnofury · 12/12/2011 21:47

Very unreasonable. You have no proof she's taken it. Phone the credit card company and report it missing now, why would you wait until tomorrow.

EverybodysScaryEyed · 12/12/2011 21:47

do you have young children? you will be mortified when you dig out from behind the sofa

i would have a really good look around before accusing her

TheFallenMadonna · 12/12/2011 21:47

I remember now - it was in her bra drawer.

Check there Wink

smashupyourtvset · 12/12/2011 21:48

I'm not labelling her - I would just sack her and not mention to her why I was sacking her.
I would say I was going to do the cleaning myself.

OP posts:
Oggy · 12/12/2011 21:48

You probably didn't put it back after your online purchases and it is knocking about somewhere tucked behind or under something.

Given there is a perfectly plausible explanation I wouldn't dream of sacking cleaner.

soandsosmummy · 12/12/2011 21:48

I lost some money. I suspected my cleaner. I telephoned her and without accusing her asked if she'd seen it or moved it and she said she'd found £150 on the coffee table and didn't think it was secure there as it could be seen from window so she'd put it in my bedside table drawer and she was really sorry for not leaving me a note but she'd had to leave in a hurry to take her neighbour to hospital. Money was there intact. She was right i should not have left it were I did

Ask her she may have moved it rather than stolen it

smashupyourtvset · 12/12/2011 21:49

I don't have a designated bra drawer.

OP posts:
TheOriginalFAB · 12/12/2011 21:50

HAve you cancelled it yet as you will be liable for any purchases otherwise.

YWBTU to sack her when you do not have cast iron proof that it is her.

I think you would be unreasonable to sack her without evidence. Cancel the card tonight - you can do that any time of day.

5318hoho8 · 12/12/2011 21:51

nah, this is a wind up, surely no decent person would point finger without proof, non?

No, well, I was really just pointing out that it wouldn't be the first time someone had wrongly jumped to conclusions re people working in the house and missing items.

Although now I am wondering whether you spread your bras between different drawers, and why...
