so, just canvassing opinion on behalf of my mum, who is a bit nonplussed by this. sge had a voucher for £9 off when you spent £50. Shopping comes to £48. She says 'oh heck, let me just grab something'. Lady behind says 'here put this through and thrusts flowers at her. (£3.50). Mum does, shopping now £51.50 less £9 so £42.50 (keep up!)
Lady doesn't give mum money for flowers, despite hint.
So, mum pays £42.50 for shopping worth £48 as obv the flowers aren't hers. Effectively free flowers for lady, and discount of £5.50 not £9....

Should have kept the flowers. But then cheeky people annoy the heck out of me.

NeuromanticisedVisionsofXmas · 09/12/2011 16:40

More fool your mum really, why did she do that?

Quenelle · 09/12/2011 16:40

Huh?

Lady behind owes your mum £3.50.

valiumredhead · 09/12/2011 16:40

Your mum needed to say 'Oi lady, you owe me 3.50!!" and if she didn't give it to her, there should've been a big fight Harry Hill stylee...

Kayano · 09/12/2011 16:41

Cheeky of lady but why would your mum do that?

Graciescotland · 09/12/2011 16:41

She should of kept the flowers.

grumpypants · 09/12/2011 16:42

neuro - i know! i said that, but i think (being an oap and all that) that she got caught and was too polite. She did make noises, but probably really small, British polite ones.

I think, the lady was kind of cba to wait while you go off and get something, shove these through.

I wouldn't have parted with the flowers until I had the cash! But your mum would have had to spend another £2 to get the £9 off so you could say that she has 'saved' £2 at some point!

MixedBerries · 09/12/2011 16:48

Other lady should definitely have paid the £3.50. Your mum wasn't advertising a free-for-all. She was about to go get something to make the total up to £50 and quite reasonably assumed the lady was just offering to save her the trip and speed up the transaction. I would never have assumed the lady wanted to get the flowers for free! What a bloody cheek- getting free flowers and then acting as if you'd done someone a favour!

grumpypants · 09/12/2011 16:51

yes, i sort of felt a bit frustrated with sorry for mum - came down on the lady being a bit of a chancer side in the end.

What's 'sge'?

YuleingFanjo · 09/12/2011 16:53

I would have thanked the woman behind and said loudly that I would grab my bunch of flowers on the way out.

Xmasbaby11 · 09/12/2011 16:58

I'd want to deck the old bag behind you - how rude! Best forgotten now though.

lottiegb · 09/12/2011 17:29

Oof, terrible. Your Mum was doing the woman a favour by not holding her up while getting something else to make up the £2. 'Oh, I thought you were helping me move through quickly but these flowers are nice, thanks'.

usualsuspect · 09/12/2011 17:31

Where did the op say it was an old bag?

it all sounds like a bit of a mix up to me

Tinselrella · 09/12/2011 17:33

Vivi - it's a typo.

That woman in the queue was very rude and incredibly cheeky - she got her flowers for free! I would have just said, oh thanks for saving me from holding you up. And kept the flowers.

bigshinydinosaur · 09/12/2011 17:34

She owes your Mum £3.50 - simples.

grumpypants · 09/12/2011 18:53

wow - thank you - mum was a bit confused as to whether she had a right to be cross about it! think i can tell her she can put it to bed now - yes, she was ripped off!
