To tackled Argos over a faulty item..

...without it's packaging?

Bought DC an in-car DVD player 6 weeks ago as we had a long trip ahead of us in the car. It played one DVD in that car journey, no problems, but then it wouldn't/couldn't recognise when I inserted another DVD.

I've gone through all the troubleshooting section to check whether it's me not following instructions, and everything I'm doing is fine. DVD player is definitely faulty.

The box has long gone into recycling, plus I've been told by a friend that Argos are stubborn in allowing refunds/exchanges.

I still have the receipt and the year's guarantee is printed on this.

Can I take it back?

Yes, it is not fit for purpose and should be either exchanged by Argos, or if they won't exchange it, returned to the manufacturer for repair :)

Of course you can take it back. Having packaging won't make any difference to whether it work or not.

Be firm, stand your ground. If they are difficult, ask for the manager and if they are still difficult, threaten to contact trading standards and report them for a breach of the sale of goods act.

We took an in car DVD back to Argos, they replaced it no quibble.

MabelLucyAttwell · 09/12/2011 10:18

Your 'contract' was with Argos so deal with them under the Sale of Goods Act (goods are not as described, not of merchantable quality or not fit for purpose). If they try to tell you to go to the manufacturer, say no it's your responsibility.

nancerama · 09/12/2011 10:18

Remember also that your contract is with the retailer, NOT with the manufacturer. Don't let them try to fob you off by telling you to contact the manufacturer.

Argos have always been brilliant IME. We took back a stairgate that broke after 1 weeks use (on holiday) and they just refunded me no question. This was at least 2 months after I'd bought it too..

Just go in, ask for a refund and they'll probably just process it.

MorelliOrRanger · 09/12/2011 10:25

If you have the receipt take it back.

LouisPasteur · 09/12/2011 10:25

Thanks everyone. That's a huge help to me. I was starting to lose confidence about this but you've all given me a bit of fire and faith.

Off to Argos this afternoon. Smile

They should be fine about it, we got DD a toy piano from there & thought that one of the speakers wan't working so we took it back without the packaging. They exchanged it with no problems at all. Then we found out that the 'faulty' speaker was a dummy one anyway and was only there for show... Blush

LouisPasteur · 09/12/2011 10:34

Just read the link. Ah - I've done them an injustice by thinking they'd be awkward. DVD player safely in my shopping bag for this afternoon. Smile

I bought an electric treadmill from Argos - it keps sqeaking all the time it was running. I called them, they replaced it a few days later. No problems whatsoever.

My Mum used to manage customer services in an Argos. Among other classics, she actually had someone bring in a deep fat fryer with the fat still in it (no receipt of course) expecting a refund Hmm .

A nice polite lady with a clean DVD player and receipt who simply wants a replacement product would possibly have made her day.

I took a broken toy back to Argos last Christmas with no box or receipt. They gave me a new one straight away and apologised! Hope you'll get such good service!
