To think that my ds isn't lazy for not walking yet?

My ds is 10 mo old. He is crawling everywhere and pulling himself up. Pil visited this weekend and said to him "you could walk, you know, if you weren't so lazy". Aibu or is this a stupid thing to say about a baby? He cannot walk because he isn't developmentally ale to do so and he will get there in his own time!

Sorry for ranting, it was just a number of things pil said to wind me up, including "have you tried giving him a cup of tea yet?". (er, no) and dictating what we will cook for Xmas dinner when they come to ours? "you've bought Christmas pudding? Oh, it's just I saw a recipe for a Christmas pannacotta in my magazine the other day." well you bloody make it then!

You rant away! And let them know that he average age of a boy to begin walking if 14 months, and the HV only gets concerned if they haven't shown signs of wanting to walk by 2 years! I hate overbearing people!

Don't let them get to you; clearly PIL are on Planet Zog. I'd have made a joke of the walking remark, "yeah it's only a year till the Olympics DS, start practising the back-flips!" Presumably through being his grandparents they must have had babies themselves at some point, but it's amazing how quickly one forgets the little details (like what's a reasonable age to walk, or drink tea).

I don't suppose there was any chance MIL was actually offering to make the pudding? No?

Anyway, more to be pitied than despised, I think, and after they've gone home the source of many a harmless giggle between you and any of your mates who also have dotty in-laws.

Seems a silly thing to be getting het up about. My dad says it all the time about my twins and has been saying it for about a year, before they could even crawl or pull to standing. They are now 22 months and no sign of walking properly yet, but I know he doesn't say it to be nasty.

Sounds like it's just his sense of humour, I'm sure he doesn't really think a 10mo should be walking or drinking tea. However YANBU, it would wind me up too!

People make stupid comments - roll your eyes and let it go. It's honestly not worth the stress, you wont change them.

If it makes you feel better - make stupid comments in return 'Oh I know, I think he should have been walking at 6 month, but kids these days - soooo lazy - what can you do??'

YANBU! My eldest didn't start walking until 23months (although he does have severe SN) and my second was 14 months (perfectly average) and I got the same line from loads of people about both of them.

Very irritating.

I don't think you're being unreasonable and you have every right to rant away. I think that the older some people get, the more opinionated they seem to become and they have no idea how what they say affects other. Or maybe they just think that, as they're older, they don't have to show consideration any more and have a right to say as they please?

My ds was a late walker - around a year old when he began to walk. The number of people (especially old people) who would tell me that something was wrong...ask if I'd spoken to the health visitor...ask what I was doing to encourage him to walk... It was so irritating, all these people with their opinion that my son should be walking. Yet I would just smile, say there's nothing wrong and that he'll just walk when he's able.

Just try to ignore or explain that HV isn't concerned. Easier said than done, I know - especially when your own child is being spoken to like that.

Love Chipping's comments . Wish I could think of things like that. It's probably due to the fact that I can't that means that people making comments like your PIL just wind me up!

They are just trying to encourage him in their weird way, they dont really think he is lazy!
Do you know how old your DH was when he walked? Cause while everyone is posting that their DCs didnt walk til x time, it is within the normal range to walk at 10m, just as much as it is to not walk til 2y.
Plus, from the "I saw a recipe" comment alone, I wouldnt be bothered. Unless they frequently complain about everything?
Oh and FWIW, my DS had tea from about 10m as it was the only thing he would drink

ignore. as soon as you announce that you are about to become parents everyone tells you what is right and wrong and it never stops

ds didn't walk until he was 16 months. took the odd step but could not be bothered with all that falling over. one day he just decided it was time to walk within a few days was walking a mile at a time (and still walks a lot he is not lazy at all)

well apparently I walked at 9mo, talked and was also reading. DS also walked at 9mo. I think as soon as your children reach 5 you completely forget what is normal :o

oh and I kno it is possible for a baby to walk at 9mo - my friend's baby did! I just think it's unlikely we both were

yes, my dd was 21 months. there's nothing wrong with her (disproportionate bodyshape aside...). she just couldn't do it. and now she can.

alegre 12 months isn't late at all! My DD is 18 months and still not walking, that is late, but I'm sure within the realms of normal.
