..to buy DC an xbox kinect for Christmas?

It is very much more money than I have ever spent on a christmas present before, and would be the only big presnent this year.

Does anyone have one? Is it worth the money?

I don't know what you should do but you should really try to make up your mind by yourself! Imagine if every single poster on AIBU had to ask everyone else if they should buy their DC what they want to buy their DC? Doesn't it strike you as a bit futile?

I have one and they are good fun but you do need a lot of space.

In order to play you need to stand 6 feet away from the sensor for single-player gaming, and 8 feet for two-player. In addition if you are playing in two player mode then you need a good few feet between the players and either side of them.

When we use it we have to stand almost in the hallway in order to get it to register us :)

Last year my DC wanted one, so we paid a third each (DCs had Christmas money, DH and I chipped in).

DS is practically surgically attached to it, so he would say it's worth the moneyGrin

unlike the Wii. He gave the Wii to DD

Menipausalhaze, because absolutely no review site is worth individual feedback from parents who are talking from personal experience!

Gamerwidow, we have the space, but not directly in fron t of the TV, does it matter if it is set up to play slightly at an angle to the tV? (Thanks, by the way, exactly the helpful sort of information I need before I decide)

Yes and they are really good for adult fitness as well. The 'instructor' soon pulls you up if you are not doing it properly!

StickyProblem · 02/12/2011 20:02

The Kinect is fantastic! Dance Central is fab for fitness, great fun.
OP it has to point at you, you'd have to turn the Kinect sensor round so it is pointing at you, then you'd want the TV to point at you too really, you wouldn't be able to see well enough if it's at an angle.

Tiredmumno1 · 02/12/2011 20:16

The kinect is fab, the kids love it, although I am not so sure you can play it at an angle.

Crabapple99 · 02/12/2011 20:19

Thanks for thet, we would have to rejig the furniture, but that should be ok.

Next question, 4GB or 250 GB?

OP posts:
gamerwidow · 02/12/2011 21:06

Yes as StickyProblem said the sensor has to face you not the TV so it may not be a problem if you are not directly in front of the TV. Although as they said obviously you still want to be able to see the TV :)

You could get by on 4GB if you were only using the xBox for kinect and didn't want to play any other xbox 360 games on it. Kinect games don't currently expect a 250GB model but some other xbox games on the market do.

It is possible that future Kinect games may expect more memory. It's up to you really as to how much you need to futureproof your console.

Well I am a very very stingy mum I guess, presents limited to a max of £50 a child and usually less. I do have 4, so this year the 4 are sharing a 3ds + 2 games between them, this is what they chose and was rather pleased they decided to share a present, instead of fight among each other.

At the end of the day it's up to you, if you can afford it and are not going into debt to buy, then a once a year big present is not so bad. I do find UK parents can go OTT with Christmas presents for their children, in previous years I could have spent an awful lot more on our children, but I dislike this commercial and peer pressure to spend so much. It's always been the same in our household, one large present with a top limit for cost. We're all different as parents, it's my choice to limit presents and cost, the next parent may fundamentally disagree with me. If you want to buy the xbox, do it and don't feel bad about it.

Crabapple99 · 03/12/2011 08:17

Thanks for all your information, going to go and get one while DC are out today.
