Not the end of the world I know, but still a bit bemused by the service I got in Sainsburys today!

I went in for some wrapping paper. Got a roll from a box in the Christmas section, which had a big promo sign on it saying 'all wrapping paper half price'. It was marked £1.99, so should have been either £1 or 99p with the offer. Took it straight to the till as that's all I wanted, did the self scan and it came up at £1.99. So I said to the lady supervising the self scan checkouts, and she got a colleague to come over. The colleague said no, they're on 3 for 2, and I said well the sign on the box def says half price, my friend I was with saw it too and we even discussed it with another lady who was looking at them too. So she said she'd go and check.

She came back, and said no, it doesn't say half price. I said well it definitely did, and I'm not buying it then (principle of the matter!) and she said 'show me where it says half price!' so we troop back to the wrapping paper, and lo and behold, the sign has gone but there is a big rip on the box where the half price sign has been pulled off!

So I said to the lady, well that's very convenient, it was DEFINITELY there 2 minutes ago (I'd picked up the wrapping and gone directly to the till) and she said 'It definitely wasn't me, you can check the CCTV if you want to!' I said 'no you're ok, I'm not that bothered about a roll of wrapping paper, but thanks for reminding me why I usually shop at tesco!' and left.

AIBU to think that she must have been the one to have removed the sign and then lied about it and to still be annoyed that I have to go to another shop to find more plain red wrapping for a ruby anniversary present, and to be even more annoyed that something so petty is still irritating me at least 7 hours later? I should probably definitely just get a life but... Grr!

YANBU. This kind of thing drives me completely bonkers. Why lie? Why not just charge you 99p, or apologise profusely for the incorrect labelling?

lurkereena · 28/11/2011 22:10

Fret not - Sainsburys have the 3 ugly sisters playing 'peep-po' with a sanitary towel in their Christmas TV advert Wink

Nuff said.

Deargdoom · 28/11/2011 22:11

I'd have checked the CCTV for badness.

squeakytoy · 28/11/2011 22:26

I would have wanted to see the CCTV too... just to prove she was lying. She (rightly) assumed you wouldnt be bothered and called your bluff. You should have taken her up on the suggestion instead!

MenopausalHaze · 28/11/2011 22:29

People usually only say "Check the CCTV if you like" when they know very well indeed that it's pointing somewhere else.

I probably should have, yes. I was just so annoyed and DS was fed up (not a happy shopper, much like me!) and I just wanted to go. Plus the security folk would have thought I was mad.

YANBU

LoveBeingAFirework · 28/11/2011 22:52

The reason she said check it is because she knew you would say no. It's a classic thing that someone lying does to make you feel bad for saying they are lying.

LoveBeingAFirework · 28/11/2011 22:53

You should go back tomorrow and say on reflection you'd like to see tge footage Grin

blackeyedsanta · 28/11/2011 23:05

silly women, she has lost a customer who will now be resentful for months probably and will go out of their way to avoid sainsbury's and lost a lot of goodwill because you have badmouthed them to your friends (lots of friends) it is not how you do business sucessfully. definately needs some retraining. some shops seem hell bent on losing customers.

MrsMuddyPuddles · 28/11/2011 23:57

How horrible of them! Next time, go around with them in the first place so she doesnt have a chance to lie can see exactly where you got it from as it could have been misfiled.

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 29/11/2011 00:00

I couldn't be arsed, either.

But what I could be arsed to do is to email their head office and ask for a copy of the CCTV.

flyingspaghettimonster · 29/11/2011 00:19

Wow, never had that before - every other supermarket cheerfully finds a way to let you get the item at the price it was marked at.

I was in my local supermarket the other day and bought an $11 of mincemeat... got near the car and it fell out of my bag and shattered. I went in to tell the staff there was broken glass and the lady said 'the bag tore, go get yourself another jar!' The bag didn't tear, it was just over full, but she winked to make sure I knew she was fine with that... glad I don't have to do Sainsbury's if that is how they treat people now.

TunaTiebacks · 29/11/2011 09:28

It was a store I've never used before, as I'm away visiting family, so don't think they'd notice if I boycotted! I will still have to use my local sainsburys as I do my nans shopping for her and she prefers sainsburys. I don't know who the lady was to complain, I've no receipt as nothing was bought and even if I had it was at the self serve. I think I will have to just get over it!

YANBU! If that was me at work (and it often is!) i would have just let you have it for 99p. After all i don't own the bloody company its not my money.

StealthPenguin · 29/11/2011 10:49

My DP works in Sainsburys - he's absolutely appalled. He's probably going to be telling his colleagues about it tonight so they can have a good ol' laugh at this bloody idiot woman and her bloody idiot ways.

FionaBruise · 02/12/2011 22:16

oh go on !!! go and get them to replay the cctv tomorrow, capture it on your phone and then post it on youtube putting it to a xmas hit and then you'll make a million pounds like that dog man in richmond park!!!
