OR should I call the RSPCA?

Next door have a rabbit, it is outside 24 hours a day in a very small run with no shelter whatsoever. It has food and drink in there and looks relatively healthy but surely at this time of year it should be in a hutch or at the very least have somewhere it can 'hide' within the run or at least sleep. I have never had a rabbit so don't know what is considered the done thing, however with the volume of cats etc..round here I imagine it must be very stressful for the animal. Anyway interested to hear opinions please.

Like you I don't know anything about rabits but agree no shelter can't be a good thing. I would phone the RSPCA for some advice and then take it from there.

aldiwhore · 26/11/2011 11:45

It should have some shelter. I'd ring anyway and ask their advice, they will tell you if no shelter is okay or not.

Poor rabbit, are there any other animal rescue places near you? RSPCA are shite IMO.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 26/11/2011 12:25

We had a rabbit that had a hutch but lived happily outside for years with just a nesting box, in this case poor bunny doesn't even have that.

Could it have burrowed tho ? And be hiding under soil ? Pub up the road had loads of rabbits that just lived happily in the pub garden, was a bit strange tbh.

But yes, i'd give someone a call, it's getting much colder now and it won't last long if it has nowhere at all to go.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 12:28

Are you sure it's not in the run during the day and then taken in at night?

CurlyBoy · 26/11/2011 12:38

It definitely should have a hutch to sleep in. We kept rabbits and it is a must.

steben · 26/11/2011 12:42

Def sure, I am not a stalkerish neighbour but our bedroom window looks directly out onto their garden where the run is. I was out last night and didnt get in til around 1am (rare) and looked out and saw it there. I have also mentioned it to DH a few times when we have been going to bed who has said "well most rabbits live outside" however wild rabbits have other rabbits and burrows for warmth!!!!! It would not be so bad if this rabbit had another one for company.

I know it has a hutch BTW in the shed - i just dont understand why it is not in there instead of being left out all night everynight!

ours have stayed out til that late on occasion simply because that's when I've gone to bed!

not ideal though, and yes it ought to have some kind of shelter not just be in the run.,
not sure if RSPCA will do much though
