I started a new job in my local department store as a cleaner. The hours are perfect & suits my DS as he can be with his daddy! no childcare costs involved. On my first day I saw a few people I knew...as I was packing up I noticed two ladies...one is a friend of my MIL pointing & saying 'i bet she thinks this is below her...didn't she used to be a shop manager'... When they saw me looking...they very quickly stopped & looked away. I just smiled..went into the other room & cried. It was said in a sarcastic way.
I would never thing cleaner or any job bringing in money for my family is below me. I am not that kind of person. AIBU to of be upset by that?

Yanbu but ywbu to dwell on such nasty people. Ignore.

Annpan88 · 22/11/2011 17:25

She sounds like a wanker of the highest order.

Awful thing to say. Your doing the best for your family and obviously have no chip on your shoulder

HalfTermHero · 22/11/2011 17:25

YANBU. How vile of them to refer to you like that. Be proud that you are earning your own money and that your job enables you to have a happy family life.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/11/2011 17:26

Ignore. They're just wankers.

What you're doing is honourable, not beneath anyone.

wifey6 · 22/11/2011 17:27

Thank you all so much. I actually enjoy my job & I do get a sense of achievement by earning my own money. My DH is wonderful by supporting us all but it's a team effort isn't it.

a jobs a job dont let it upset you small minded pricks i say.

Abra1d · 22/11/2011 17:29

Honest work is something to be proud of.

I have had cleaning jobs in the past and got a lot of satisfaction from doing them well.

Crazyfatmamma · 22/11/2011 17:33

They are so not worth your tears. You could be quite comfortable sat on your arse all day- maybe claiming benefits but you arent- you are earning a respectable living for your family. My Auntie has a Masters degree and owns her own shop but when times became hard she worked in a factory. You should hold your head up high and just think of all the extra things you can now get for you children. Well done you x

Yourefired · 22/11/2011 17:35

They are stupid women. Shame on them. I hope they reflected on their behaviour and felt lacking. This is nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Well done you for finding the one job in the country that is enjoyable and fits around your family's needs.

pigletmania · 22/11/2011 17:36

Ignore they are just nasty wretches.

StealthPenguin · 22/11/2011 17:39

It's comments like that that make me sick.

My father bullied me for years, telling me I'd never grow up to be anything, and that because I was so stupid I'd just be cleaning Tesco or shovelling chips in McDonalds.

I worked my arse off, got perfect GCSE's and A-Levels and got a secure place in University (that I had to put off because of my pregnancy unfortunately!).

And now, all of a sudden, people like my father are telling people like me that we are "entitled" and arsey because we feel like we should be doing more than "just shovelling chips", when it's their own fault for telling us that, unless we do well we'll end up in a "fucking horrendous job".

(FWIW, I'm looking for work but can't find a single job at the moment.)

If you enjoy your job, then you hold your head high. People are going to be bitchy about anything, given half the chance. Just ignore it.

mamamoonmim · 22/11/2011 17:40

I think what you're doing is honourable two.

They sound like stuck up judgemental bitches

mamamoonmim · 22/11/2011 17:41

too*

Becaroooo · 22/11/2011 17:47

They are arseholes.

I hope you keep enjoying your job x

lovemyangels · 22/11/2011 17:47

What horrid people! How great you have a job which you can do without needing childcare, hold your head up high, you are worth 10 of them!

pissedrightoff · 22/11/2011 17:55

They are not ladies, That is for sure.

I have been in management positions before but I was happier doing my cleaning job (holiday homes) very little stress, decent money and best of all, no customers to deal with.

carabos · 22/11/2011 17:56

Ffs, that sort of attitude makes my blood boil. You are a fully functioning, tax-paying adult member of society. How the hell can that be below any of us? Angry.

pissedrightoff · 22/11/2011 17:56

oops posted too quick

ignore them and hold your head up, no-one is defined by their job.

plupervert · 22/11/2011 17:59

You could always shove your broom up their arses!

Seriously, they should be ashamed of themselves.

iklboo · 22/11/2011 18:01

Next time she's in report her for shoplifting (I'm kidding). Seriously, ignore the bint woman. You're doing a job you enjoy & earning money. The problem is with her not you.

Tortington · 22/11/2011 18:03

you should've pointed and chanted ruuuuuuuuuuuude ruuuuuuuuuuuuuude ruuuuuuuuuuuuude

snuffaluffagus · 22/11/2011 18:10

Aw you poor thing. It's easy to say ignore them, but that's exactly what you should try doing. Tell your MIL what the woman said, drop her in it!

JamieComeHome · 22/11/2011 18:13

she's just projecting her own insecurities onto you. And showing herself to be an utter snob. Their is honour in doing any job to the best of your ability

JamieComeHome · 22/11/2011 18:13

there

Hullygully · 22/11/2011 18:14

Their problem not yours.
