to post from the same IP address as another MNetter?

I carry my iPad around with me everywhere and sometimes use the wifi of other MNetters I know in RL and they use mine. I wonder how many of you know that YABU to do this according to MNHQ, especially when posting on the same threads?

Has anyone else ever done this? Did you know you were BU?

Why would you post when at somebody else's house.

Are they really that boring?

ThoughtCriminal · 17/11/2011 19:58

Babysitting can be a bit boring sometimes

Its to stop 'sockpuppetry' presumably. I.e. when one person has several different aliases and uses them to back up their points of view by agreeing with themselves on threads, etc.

MissPenteuth · 17/11/2011 20:00

I can see how it could cause confusion for MNHQ, but surely they'd contact the MNer first and give them a chance to explain the situation rather than just ban them outright. IP addresses aren't unique, so they're not a foolproof way of catching out trolls and sockpuppets anyway.

HopeEternal · 17/11/2011 20:00

I would hope that MNHQ realise that a lot of the posters on here are also RL friends who might visit each other and share wifi in the process.

Surely it's sockpuppetry they are trying to stamp down on and as they can look at your nickname change history it would be easy for them to see that it's two different people.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 17/11/2011 20:03

I am baffled as to which social occasion would involve Mnetting Grin. Is that like those fabled FB couples who talk to each other online from the same sofa?

bruffin · 17/11/2011 20:08

There have been trolls on here who have set up more than one account and have been caught out because all the accounts are from the same IP address.

squeakytoy · 17/11/2011 20:12

MNHQ would easily be able to check if the poster ALWAYS posts from the same IP addresses, or if it changes. And they are probably only going to check posts that are questionable anyway.. they are not going to check every post made.

I have a couple of RL friends who post on here, who often stay at my house, and it is not unknown for us to be chatting in the room whilst all tapping away on our laptops doing farmville and MN important emails and such..

Thingumy · 17/11/2011 20:12

Can't see the problem.

Surely if 2 mnetters meet up and both post on a thread such as 'ThoughtCriminal has got me pissssssssed' it's the same?

They each have they own usernames and it's not trolling or sockpuppetry is it?

mummynoseynora · 17/11/2011 20:13

well an ip address is unique to a machine , so even at another mnetters house your IP wouldn't be exactly the same, unless you were sharing the ipad, taking it in turns loggingin in and out?!

in which case there is no way the mnhq would know you WEREN'T the same person!

so YABU

OliviaMumsnet · 17/11/2011 20:17

YABU to brag about your iPad Envy but FWIW, The Secret Service Does Not Comment on Procedure.
Thanks
MNHQ

ThoughtCriminal · 17/11/2011 20:21

It's an iPad2 actually....

I have logged into MN at my sister's (also a MNer) house before and so I would have occasionally posted from the same IP address as her. Never crossed my mind it could be a problem tbh Confused

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 20:40

I am a mod on a different forum, and although we can see IPs, we wouldn't bother unless we were looking at particularly tiresome or abusive people and might then notice that there were two or more tiresome usernames on the same IP and having a pattern of doing the same tiresome things.

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 20:40

no we wouldn't

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 20:40

yes we would, you stupid dummy

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 20:41

but with different names
