To think this is a really strange thing to say?

My middle DC has just had school photos done, hence we have a large copy of the picture displayed in the middle of the mantlepiece, as you do with a new pic. FIL's partner came round the other night. She has known all of my DC since they were born and knows them well. After a while she looked at the photo "Is that a relative's child then?" Me "Erm no, it's Mini Hexagonal", "Really? I wondered who it was, I thought it must be a relative's child or something".

Firstly, it does look exactly like DD, secondly why the heck would I have a big photo of someone else's child displayed in the middle of the mantlepiece. I just thought it was an odd thing to say.

Haha! I was at a friends house a few months after she'd had DD2.
When her husband came in from work, I was holding the baby.
Her Dh looked at me and baby (his DD2), said "Oh, DW didn't tell me you'd had another one! Congratulations!"
I said "Umm, thanks! But this is actually your DD!"
He was so embarassed!

One of the lads I work with with is a lovely guy but not the sharpest tool in the box. One night there were a few of us closing up & one of my colleagues had left his keys near the door. The not so bright lad picked up these keys, looked at the photo on the keyring of my colleague & his girlfriend & turned to me and said "Are these your keys?" Like I have pictures on my keyring of people I know and their partners Smile

There is some kind of medical condition where people cannot remember people's faces - even close relatives and famous people. But I guess you'd have noticed that before now.

recall · 14/11/2011 17:38

that is spooky

quirrelquarrel · 14/11/2011 17:46

It's called prosopognosia. Some people have it very mildly and for others it's a real impediment (esp. in the workplace).

quirrelquarrel · 14/11/2011 17:47

Though I'm not saying that's what the OP's FIL's partner has!

My mum failed to recognise a photo of me looking just like me, taken a week or so before she saw it. She thought it was one of my friends who's 20 years older than me Grin.

I shared a house while at uni and when my sister sent me school photos of her twin sons I showed then to one of the girls there.
Her: Are they brothers
Me: Yes, they're twins
Her: They don't look very similar
Me: Yes they do, they're identical twins
Her: I don't think they look identical

My nephews are really, really similar looking. So much so that most relatives find it hard to tell them apart, and their own dad used to often mix them up. One school photo my sister ended up with photos of the same boy as the photographer had got muddled and thought he'd photographed the same boy twice so got rid of one twin's picture. So there is no way they do not look very very similar! I thought that was a really odd thing for her to say too.

My MIL can't tell which of her own dcs is which when looking at their baby photos...she has to look for other clues such is what the sofa looks like or what her hairstyle was Hmm.

My mum on the other hand regularly calls her children by the names of her cats. Double Hmm

carabos · 14/11/2011 18:48

I worked with a guy who had identical twin DS. When asked which was which, he said he couldn't tell, except that "one of them wears glasses".

I come from a big family, amd DM counts down to check who the baby is in old pics. .

You also regularly get called by everyone elses name Grin
