Soft boiled egg

AIBU for being annoyed that I have just spent a weekend with friends who couldn't for the life of them make me a soft boiled egg for breakfast. One day it wa hard boiled, the next raw.
They argued that it was something that was hard to get right.

SardineQueen's method is the same one I use: "(fridge to cold water, bring to boil then 2 mins 15 secs with large free range waitrose eggs)"

That timing works perfectly for me and our eggs are very large and from our own hens, not Waitrose.

What I do find annoying is that is I want more than one egg, the second one is carrying on cooking while you eat the first, even out of the water, so the yolk is never runny enough if the first one is perfect...

Right I am going to offer DH a boiled egg whe he gets in from work in 7 mins.
He will not turn down a boiled egg.
And I am going to see if I can get it right when there are no children around my ankles Grin

lazydog could you plunge into cold water? masterchef is on here and I suddenly remembered that;s the sort of thing they get up to

(i) I switch on my electric hob to full heat (mine is 5 but my cooker is more than 20 years old).
(ii) I put an egg into a pan.
(iii) I run the hot tap until the water comes out hot.
(iv) I run the hot water into the pan until the egg is just about covered.
(iv) I put the pan on the hob.
(v) When the water is boiling, I turn it down to 3.5 and look at the clock to see where the minute hand is
(vi) I usually have Large eggs so I take the pan off the heat after 3 minutes simmering.
(vii) Drain the water from the pan and, with a tea towel or other cloth to prevent burnt fingers, put the egg into an egg cup.
(viii) While the egg is still in the shell, it continues to cook.
(ix) While it is boiling prepare your soldiers or toast your bread before you put your egg into the pan because toasting bread and buttering it can take longer than the egg takes to boil.

Try this. It works for me but, of course, not for everyone. Our cookers are all different. We use differently sized eggs. Free range eggs might be different from battery eggs.

Worth a try and I would like to hear any comments of any sort.

Well I bodged it. I got distracted on MN and took them off after 2 mins 40 rather than 2 mins 15. And they had obviously just turned hard. DH said he thought about 30 secs too long which was exactly how long it was. Pah.

So there we are. My method would work for me if I stopped MNing Grin

onepieceofcremeegg · 14/11/2011 21:55

tbh if you came to stay with me there would be a choice:

bowl of cereal

OR

breakfast in local cafe/pub. Grin Just saying.

startail · 14/11/2011 22:20

Please don't ask me. I don't like boiled eggs.

mrsruffallo · 15/11/2011 09:57

I plunge my egg into boiling waterfor 3.5 minutes. Always comes out just right- hot but runny with no gloop.
I really don't like the thought of going to a local cafe for breakfast, and can't abide cereal.

Sardine queen- I think trail and eror is a good learning curve in this scenario. Just try to stay away from MN for just over 3 minutes and you will be fine!
