Medical Opinion that is?
Long & complicated so will do my best to keep it simple, but please bare with me as fighting migraine
Earlier on in the year at a routine check up with my ENT specialist I was in agony with a lymph gland infection that presses on my trigeminal nerve - its excruciatingly painful & the only way I could make the appointment was to dose myself up on Morphine, but it leaves me feeling very spaced out, so by way of apology for that, I mentioned this now recurring infection to the ENT Doc.
He decides as it's my throat of sorts he can investigate & sends me for a scan - Scan comes back showing that I have a piece of root, he thinks infected root, left over from a wisdom tooth infection, he believes this could be the source of the infections & possible even Sinus problems on the same side - not his area, so passes me over to the Oral/Maxillo Surgery Doctors.
A couple of months later at my appointment with this specialist, they book me in for surgery.
In the meantime I have an appointment with Physio as regards neck/arm problems & chronic migraine - I mention the surgery as it's the following week & worry it might interfere with any course of treatment - he wants details & tells me he has just come back from a very interesting course that links dental problems with a lot of the same trouble I am having & that the trigeminal nerve links up to a nerve junction that also runs to my arm, neck & this all can be can be linked to migraine - so he postpones until after the surgery, telling me he wont start treatment as he suspects that the surgery could well solve more problems than expected.
I also have a Fibromyalgia & ME diagnosis - not expecting a miracle cure, but realise that as I took ill in the months after I had this emergency wisdom tooth removal, there could well be a link there too - physio agrees
12 hours before my Op - they Cancel -
as took a lot of organising with cover for DD & for DH to be around as he doesn't work locally, no near family that can help (MIL too frail herself) & all our friends work too, but other Mums at DDs School were happy to help with pick up & drop off for a few days :) - also expense of stocking up on cool liquid diet for up to a week etc
no real explanation as to why its cancelled, but I was p'd off, so rang back & asked why - I was told it was because on checking the surgery list against available surgeons, that my surgery was too complicated for the surgeon working that day & I would have to go to another town - one which I had already said I could do - we have HUGE state of the art hospital here
6 weeks later I get a call giving me 1 days notice to go into for surgery - DH has to give his work 2 weeks notice for holiday or he wont get paid, also DD is now on crutches/cast so needs extra help so not as easy to see to her self on getting in from school etc - so I have no choice but to turn it down as just can't get organised that quickly - I tell them I ned 2 weeks notice - they tell me I have to go to other town then
I then get a letter calling me back to see the head honcho surgeon who will apparently need to do my op - only its not him - his stand in basically tells me they've now decided not to do the surgery - when I question why I'm told lots of flannel about there being a lot of blood, making it hard to see
& tooth & bone are the same, so can't be certain they won't miss it & cause me more problems than it solves -
I query the infection & I'm old that an Xray cant show infection, so the other - 2 Doctors couldn't know there is infection - I remind him its a Cat scan & also if it doesn't show infection, he equally cant be sure there isn't any - he says if there was infection it would show "trails" to the site of my recurring infections (sinus & Lymph Gland) , I ask about dormant pockets of infection in the bone causing flare-ups & I am told that doesn't happen
I also go on to explain about a previous ENT surgery, where the bone was infected & doing exactly that & had to be cut away - he just reiterates that if that is so, then they can't guarantee they will get it, so no point in putting me through surgery
Of course I don't want to go through an unnecessary Operation, but I'm really wondering if his reasons are accurate or is it more down to the fact they want me to go to another town & I've said I can't - it makes the organisation for DD etc much more difficult
AIBU to consider asking my GP for a referral to a different Surgeon for a second opinion - after all, 2 have said I need the surgery & believe it will help, but the one whose area it is, works under this Doctor who has now said no??
Advice please :) - thanks :)
