A new hairdresses is opening in the village and it brings the total to Eight. All within a ten minute walk of each other. I wouldnt mind but I shave my head

What we need is a cheese shop but no bugger me no

It is weird how certain businesses flock together.

I'm near Marlow and there are four beauty salons next door to each other.

Every other shop is either poncetastic house shop (The White Shop, Cath Kidston etc) or a poncetastic coffee shop.

You can't buy a cheap t shirt or a packet of clothes pegs, just all this unnecessary crap.

LittleMissFlustered · 08/11/2011 23:32

The shopping street near my daughter's school has five hairdressers, four beauty salons and four coffee shops on it. There's a butcher and a greengrocer there too apparently, but you can't find it for women wandering around with overdone hair and cups of coffee clutched in the talon-bedecked hands:o

bethelbeth · 08/11/2011 23:35

It actually really annoys me.

The general logic is that 'Hairdressers do well here, I will open a hairdressers'

What they don't realise is that they are just diluting the target audience and hoping for the best rather than bringing more to the area.

99% of the time they won't last longer than a year. People will stick to their hairdresser/deli/beautician/shop that they always like and you would be lucky to make a pittance unless you know your market inside out

CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/11/2011 07:26

You should go along to the area around Upton Park tube, just down from the West Ham ground. I've never seen so many nail-bars and shops offering wigs and hair-extensions within a 100 yard radius.

fraktious · 09/11/2011 07:40

or will once I'm back in the country.

We go up to HW Asda for basic baby clothes. It's madness.

bruffin · 09/11/2011 07:43

We have 9 hairdressers within a 10 minute walk, in just one direction. They don't drum up more trade they are empty half the time.

meglet · 09/11/2011 07:46

Wasn't there a thread the other week that said hair-dressers + beauty / nail parlours are sometimes cover for money laundering?

We have 1 hairdressers in our town that I'm pretty damn sure is a cover for something.

carabos · 09/11/2011 08:08

In our town of 30,000 people we have 21 establishments that offer one or more of hairdressing, nails, beauty etc.

valiumredhead · 09/11/2011 08:15

We have 9 in the same high street - all mad busy and thriving, I always think it's amazing they do so well but they are packed and Saturdays there are queues!

Andrewofgg · 09/11/2011 08:27

So what do you want? Some sort of official body allocating shops to trades?

Welcome to the real world.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/11/2011 09:16

We are in the real world Andrewofgg... just remarking on the concentration of salons offering the same thing and wondering how they drum up enough trade to stay open. It would be equally odd if there were nine tattoo parlours or nine health food shops on a small high street, for example.

purplepidjin · 09/11/2011 09:24

Think yourself lucky. My street has two funeral directors and a denture shop Hmm

Esta3GG · 09/11/2011 09:30

The sudden proliferation of tattoo parlours astonishes me more than the hairdresser thing.
Who are all these people gagging to get inked on a regular basis?

ShoutyHamster · 09/11/2011 09:37

Put a wig on a round of cheese and leave it outside their door

squareegg · 09/11/2011 09:41

3 'art spaces' have popped up in my tiny town. All individually owned, all permanent rather than the pop up galleries you sometimes see. All very nice but there are only 8000 residents and for most their idea of art is a particularly exciting formation of sheep...

Andrewofgg · 09/11/2011 15:28

Cogito it was the OP who said too many rather than a lot - which suggests that it should not be allowed. Unless of course it means too many for them all to make it in which case we all agree! :)
