I have the very same problem.

In fact, I have spent hours looking for it. The nearest I get to off, is when the page shows Facebook instead.

What kind of computer is it? On mine I just hold in the "on" switch.

Or you could unplug it.

MoreBeta · 01/11/2011 21:09

Unplug it and take out the battery if it is a laptop.

alt/cont/delete starts task master which will tell you what is still running and give you an option to stop anything which may be running in the background
muppet disclaimer applies cos I am a techno fuckwit

Personally, I love Alt-Ctrl-Delete, aka the three-fingered salute.

In extreme situations: Whether it's the browser or the whole computer that's frozen, and you can't figure out what to do, the "off" button is the same as the "on" button. Hold down the "on" button and keep holding it down for several seconds until the computer beeps and starts going through the usual start-up screens. Then you can get to the normal shut-down options.

That's fairly brutal and shouldn't be used too often; if a computer freezes too often then that's a sign that there's deeper problems.

Alt-Ctrl-Del brings up Task Manager, where you can kill off certain processes, but that can be a bit scary without a bit more knowledge.

Auntie you have to do the sandwiches BEFORE you start mning otherwise the bloody thing never turns off and sandwiches get made at midnight when the power runs out!
