thousandDenier · 23/10/2011 19:39

Bite on wooden spoon? Or is it metal? Confused

Try both!

Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie · 23/10/2011 19:41

i keep a bowl of cold water nearby and keep dipping the onion in it,seems to work.
ds1 said he hates onions because they make mummy cryGrin

Ria28 · 23/10/2011 19:42

I learned a good tip recently - the oils that hurt your eyes are all in the bottom of the onion, if you cut that last you should be ok.

youcantparkthatthere · 23/10/2011 19:47

chop top and bottom off, peel, wash ubder cold running tap for 10-15 secs, no more watery eyes!

crazynannawitchbitch · 23/10/2011 19:47

Peel under running water [hwink]

TheyCallMeKipper · 23/10/2011 19:52

Put wrists under water and then chop the onion while they are still wet. If they dry, wet them again. Hands can be wet too, but wrists must be - not hands only.

It really works for me.

PigletJohn · 23/10/2011 19:53

if you put them in a sink of cold water, peel them and cut the top and bottom off underwater, you can then take them out for chopping with no ill effects

(or at least, I can)

entropygirl · 23/10/2011 20:11

If you have an extractor fan, then peel them on the counter as close to the fan as you can do. Put the fan on as high as it will go and the vapours which irritate your eyes get sucked away.

metal spoon! Grin

contact lenses help according to my friend! and my glasses do help a little.

beanandspud · 23/10/2011 22:16

Put a piece of kitchen roll in your mouth. The kitchen roll acts like a shield and catches the onion 'fumes' before they reach your eyes unfortunately you also look like a bit of a muppet.

entropygirl · 23/10/2011 22:44

bean let me guess - to get the full effect you also have to take a picture and post it on the interwebs?

Whistle!

springydaffs · 23/10/2011 22:50

I've been putting a tea towel on my head for years (when I'm chopping onions, obvoiusly)

it doesn't really work

SirHumphreyAppleby · 23/10/2011 22:53

Really? It doesn't work, you say, springy?

DeepPurple · 23/10/2011 22:55

Wearing contact lenses really helps. Sadly, you get used to wearing them and the one time you chop onions without them Confused

40notTrendy · 23/10/2011 22:56

Yanbu. My DH does them coz he wears contacts Grin

BistoBear · 23/10/2011 22:56

Contact lenses work :) I thought onions had been genetically modified to not make our eyes water any more Blush Then I chopped onions wearing glasses and my eyes were streaming....

BistoBear · 23/10/2011 22:57

Lots of crossed posts! :)

Bossybritches22 · 23/10/2011 22:58

Chew gum....tastes foul all onion-y but it works!!
