To be freaking out?

I'm on a trip, staying in a hostel-type place. I'm the only person in my room, with a door leading directly to the outside. So it's easy to get to my room with nobody knowing about it.

I got a missed call last night from an unrecognized number. I rang back, thinking it might be a friend I was meant to be seeing, but got no answer. They then rang me. Wouldn't say who they were, knew my name but I didn't recognise them, nor could I hear them very well. So I put the phone down and ignored further calls.

Then got text which I left answering til this morning, when I asked them who they were. Got the answer "Don't vorry, how old are you?"

I know I should ignore it all but AIBU to be freaking slightly?

BUT it might have been someone phoning a random number and nothing to do with where you're staying.

How did they get your number? How is the hostel relevant?

No idea how they got my number. Hostel's only relevant as someone could get into my room with no one knowing.

I don't think it can be someone trying their luck re number as they knew my name. It's not that common a name so unlikely they just guessed it.

Do you really think I wouldn't be over-reacting going to the police? Can the police id mobile numbers?

Doubt I'll find any other accommodation as the town's fully booked for a festival, which is why I'm here.

then it's someone on the staff who has access to your personal details and KNOWS YOU ARE ALONE. and vulnerable. Sweetie, get out of there. definitely tell the police as whoever it is will be targetting vulnerable guests (and all guests are vulnerable). go to the police NOW. (sorry to shout)

nope, sorry. I hope you find somewhere but you can't go back there. Whoever it is is an idiot as you have his phone number, and so do the police.

Try and buy a doorstop / wedge to use in your room. You can get alarmed ones but doubt you'll get one on Stornoway.
Maybe mention to the hostel manager too, if anyone had called asked for you etc.

If it happens again I would make it known to the local police.

Could you move rooms? Go in with someone else? Sorry, I've never stayed in a hostel so not quite sure of how it's set up, but are there staff there who could help you?

I don't, but I do have cousins nearby if you're really desperate, but not with B&B. Surely you can get other accommodation just out of town? Have you got a car? There's buses too.

Definitely tell the police though, not right for someone to freak you out like that.

Oh, it's the Mod, isn't it? Hmm, it will be busy.

Let us know how you're getting on and if you're stuck I'll try to help - just don't know how I'd explain it to my cousins.....

If you see a hairy accordion player busking near the library, that's one of my cousins, am sure he'd be able to help you sort something out.

They should know of anyone with spare accommodation.
Y'know if you tell any decent local, they'll be livid that you should feel unsafe there. I'm pretty mad too.

I don't understand why you're worried. I can see that the location of your room might be a concern but the caller didn't withhold his number, which he would if he meant trouble.

Ok, I have spoken to the police just for peace of mind. They suggested I block the number, and took details in case anyone else reported similar. I told a very level-headed friend What's been happening. He brushed it off til the text, then he mentioned the police (which surprised me) so I feel less idiotic for doing so.
Someone's moving into my room tonight, so at least I won't be on my own, and will be safe enough with someone else there. It is the Mod and the place is heaving. But I suspect it's a coincidence of timing, rather than anything suspect here.
Why am I worried? Because I've had bad luck in the past and tend to be hypersensitive about these things. Hence my AIBU. If the overwhelming opinion was to stop being silly I would have tried to shrug it off.
Lala thanks for your help. I'll be ok now I not on my own, but if I see your cousin I shall slip him a note to say thanks to you.

Glad you're sorted now, and better you're not on your own. I think I might be inclined to let the management of the hostel know you've reported it to the police so that if it is one of them.... just in a loud-mouthed chatty sort of a way.

Have fun! Are you performing? I've never been.
