Went there this morning - fortunately the older kids were in school. Every single checkout had a huge halloween sweet display in front of it. I mean huge - the size you get in morrisons. AFAIK waitrose hasn't done this before - I've never seen it in my branch - they usually go out of their way to provide a pleasant and stressed mother-friendly shopping experience.

AIBU to be a bit miffed?

Go and burn the store down!

AnotherJaffaCake · 11/10/2011 18:33

They are in our's too, within easy reach of my toddler. But he does understand the "no" and "put it back" o:.

AnotherJaffaCake · 11/10/2011 18:33

the word "no".

Emsmaman · 11/10/2011 18:36

My main issue is WTF is Halloween being pushed onto us here? This is the UK not America. Seems like just another excuse to buy sht we don't need. Last year I bought mini chocs in case we had trick or treaters and we didn't have a single one (SW London). The previous few years when we lived in Central London I used to spend the evening ignoring the doorbell and used to get really pssed off that parents were there encouraging their kids to ask strangers for treats!

SauvignonBlanche · 11/10/2011 18:37

Obviously Waitrose expect more of you. Wink
No, YANBU, it's annoying.

KittyFane · 11/10/2011 18:39

Agree, DD (8) is attracted to 'tat' like a moth to flame.

I always agree that "it looks good but we can't buy it, sorry."
End of conversation.

BatsUpMeNightie · 11/10/2011 18:53

Seems like just another excuse to buy sht we don't need* - Here's my good idea - see what you think.

Just don't fricking buy it then!

ecclesvet · 11/10/2011 19:34

Americans are one of the largest immigrant groups in the UK, why shouldn't immigrants be able to celebrate their cultural festivals?

Or is Halloween 'beneath' you, OP?

squeakytoy · 11/10/2011 19:37

I've never seen it in my branch - they usually go out of their way to provide a pleasant and stressed mother-friendly shopping experience.

Grin

Oh dear.... you sound a right fun-loving bundle of joy...

vincentvangogh · 11/10/2011 20:29

Not bothered about celebrating halloween ecclesvet, would be quite happy for huge ranges of sweets and goods for any religious festival you like, just not at the effing checkout where you have to queue with whining children after saying no the whole way round the shop.

YANBU. quickcheck?

ecclesvet · 11/10/2011 20:51

But there are always sweets at the checkout, why does it matter that they're now Halloween-themed?

MamaChocoholic · 11/10/2011 20:55

there are not normally sweets at our waitrose checkout, eccles.

whostolemyname · 11/10/2011 20:57

oh no! not like ...not like MORRISONS!!!!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 11/10/2011 20:58

ecclesvet there aren't sweets at the checkout in Waitrose!

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 11/10/2011 21:09

Don't care. I am really really really good at saying no Grin

And at totally ignoring pleas for sweets.

Sometimes I sing no no no-no-no-no-NOOOOOOOO (high) while dancing a bit.

I am a horrible mother.

Ah well. They'll get over it. Kids will pester, parents will say no, tis the natural order and all that, innit Grin

vincentvangogh · 11/10/2011 21:57

ok, just to clarify, I'm having a whinge about sweets at the checkout, not about halloween. The sweets at all the checkouts just happened to be halloween themed. Our Waitrose has never done this before.

Twatrose is way overrated anyway TBH.

lurkerspeaks · 12/10/2011 17:30

But the waitrose sweets are great........

Halloween creme eggs and swizzell's double dips cunningly renamed spooky dips.

Cheered up my nightshift no end!

OldGreyWassailTest · 12/10/2011 17:35

Times is 'ard - they've got to join the masses or go under.

mildertduck · 12/10/2011 18:48

Anything but Morrisons!

Yes, YABU and a snob with it.
