Swearing LO's

My DS1 is nearly 5 and came out with 'Dog Shit' the other day, and I was appalled.

Now I understand kids will pick up on bad language and may repeat it but we don't swear and I don't know where he's picked it up from.

Anyway, just wondering what other MN's do when / if your child swears?

I wouldn't want my 5 year old saying that either. I think everyone has different levels of tolerance concerning that. I certainly wouldn't just ignore it if that is not the kind of language I use in my house.

Without going OTT, I tell them not to say it.

If your DS is 5, he's probably heard it at school.

I wouldnt like mine saying this either, I would warn them once that it wasnt approriate language (in case they didnt know) second time would have whatever your standard punishment for low level bad behaviour is.

I would make it quite clear that those words are unacceptable but without a lot of fuss and see where you go from there.

A 5 YO has no idea when and where different language is appropriate sparkle, so it's best to not allow any swear words, whether they're borderline swears or not.

Unless you're not bothered about your 5 YOs teacher telling you your DC have called her a shitting bastard?

Ignoring it doesn't tell them it's not OK to say it.

I got told it was 'fucking raining' the other day by 2.6 yr old DS. Explained it was a naughty word and little boys didn't use it. He helpfully informed me daddy says it. Daddy has been introduced to alternate words!!!

Mine's only 2 so I can't answer the questions. Although 'stuck' does sound like something similar. Hmm

Oh he knew it was naughty as he was giving me a 'testing the water / sheepish' look and smile!

I explained that it was a naughty word and we don't use those words as they are not nice and Father Christmas will be very cross if he hears naughty words, and he is always listening of course...see how that goes.

My friend said she told her DD2 that if she heard her swearing again she would brush her teeth with soap!! I've still not made my mind up on that idea, but I think it's probably a bit much. But then we don't smack in our house either so I don't know what I'd do if he said it again.

Might try ignoring

I wouldn't want my children using words like dog shit either OP.

I've always explained what the word is, explained why they mustn't say it...and then warned them that now they know...if they use it again they'll be punished.

On a different note, I had to have a word with my son's yr 3 teacher last year for repeatedly using the word 'Bugger' in class.

My son thought it was fair game to call his brother a 'lazy little bugger' because his teacher uses the word all the time Grin

My 4yr old DGS was told by his teacher she didnt like something he'd done. Apparently he told her 'You can just suck mi plums then'

This reminds me of the joke about two little boys who decide for a dare to swear in front of their mum. The oldest goes first and on coming downstairs for breakfast declares 'dont give me those crappy Rice Krispies either this morning mum I want Coco Pops and be bloody quick about it'. Mum calmly pours him a large bowl of Rice Krispies , tips it over his head,picks him up by the ankles and carries him kicking and screaming back upstairs to bed .

She comes back down ,turns to his little brother and asks 'And what would you like for breakfast ?'

'Not fucking Coco Pops - thats for sure'

I don't think you need to use Father Christmas to tell him not to say it OP, just tell him not to from yourself.

I'm sure he'll listen if you use The Voice.
