to hope my DS doesn't help TOO much!

Hi.

Today a bride was coming to my house to collect her wedding cake. I make cakes part time as a paying hobby. BTW this could really out me in RL but I don't care as it's quite funny.

I took the smallest tier of the cake to her car, and she came with the biggest tier. My DS (3) was watching us and he suddenly disappeared. I had one of those mummy moments when you just know what is going to happen, and I followed him back into the house at about 300miles per hour. As I'd suspected he was carrying the middle tier out of the house in an attempt to be helpful and SMASH, it landed on the floor. I was in bits. Luckily the cake wasn't. I guess a Madeira cake covered in icing is pretty indestructible.

Luckily the bride, who was hot on my heels, was incredibly understanding, and managed to calm me down! The cake was still perfect.

My question is am I being unreasonable to think my DS should help a little bit less and NOT TOUCH THE WEDDING CAKES? Obviously I'm just asking for your embarrassing moments and praying I'm not alone in the HUGE mess I found myself in?

Sorry, it didn't make me laugh, it made me cringe for the poor bride who could have had her wedding cake ruined!

But it's lovely that the bride was a nice one and was understanding. I think I would have been too, but my bridesmaidzilla (childless) would have absolutely freaked!

Argh I didn't even think from the other side. Of course if I'd been the bride I would have been horrified. I am just very lucky that the bride was a lovely lovely woman. If the cake had been ruined I would have stayed up all night putting it right.

Gulp, am now worrying about my reputation! I have a new rule. Anyone that is collecting more than one cake has to carry each tier to their car while I hold DS down in an iron grip!

My answer would be ...... dont have children underfoot when running a business (BTW do you declare your earnings ?)

OP at least he was trying to be helpful and didn't just think that it would be fun to go and smash up the middle tier whilst you weren't there.

It made me cringe too - for you mostly though, OP. I guess I was caught up in the horror of the moment.

troisgarcons - that is the second really pointless attempt at criticism I have read from you today. Do you think maybe you could have a go at pretending to be a nice supportive person, rather than showing yourself to be out to hurt people's feeling and offend?

I laughed at the image of the realisation of what DS was doing dawning on you, you hurtling through the house to watch the cake fall, like one of those slow-mo moments in films. Grin

Glad all was OK and the bride-to-be was understanding.

I regularly point out to DS1 that it's only help, if the person wants you to do it.

Case in point, I didn't want him to help his younger brother take off his pyjama top this morning, and especially not by offering to cut him out of the top as he couldn't get it over his head!

Thank you for all your helpful comments. I was HORRIBLY embarrassed and have learned a valuable lesson. If anyone comes to collect a cake in future I will let them take them to the car and look after my DS while they are doing it!

Helpfulness is wonderful. The bride said how lovely that he was interested. Maybe not so interested in future eh?

DS should certainly not be touching the cakes. I wouldn't be happy if I paid for cake to be made and then saw their child touching it. It would make me wonder how much help the child had had in making it. Bit yuk!

If the cake didn't smash when it landed on the floor, how are you expecting anyone to eat it? Hope you have insurance for dental injuries if the icing is that hard :)

(seriously - if I'd been the bride I would have insisted on a replacement tier regardless. I don't believe in the 10-second rule - once food has been on the floor it cannot be served. I also wouldn't be impressed by your son not knowing not to touch the cakes.)

Oh it was boxed! I didn't explain that very well. It was in a white cake box which explains why it had a cushioned landing I suppose. No bit of cake touched my perfectly hoovered and hygienic floor :)

DS didn't touch the cake itself either as it was in the box. He just tried to help by picking up the box. He knows not to touch cakes that I'm making. Heck, I feel like my reputation is in tatters! I should never have posted haha!

I know. I was a bit shocked that he icing was so perfect. It was fondant rather than royal so I expected at least a dent. Glad there wasn't though.

OP, your ds sounds very sweet, but maybe a bit too helpful Grin sounds like a case of all is well that ends well, I wouldn't discourage him from helping but give him another 'important job' to do next time, like holding the door! I found your story funny! Some people clearly had grumpy flakes for breakfast!
