To be absolutely DREADING my hysteroscopy this afternoon

Could do with some handholding tbh, but feel a bit of a wimp! I have had major surgeries over the years, 3 children 1VB 2CS, but my Mirena was pure agony to be inserted a few years ago and its all I can focus on - that this will be equally as painful. GP at the time took about 20 minutes to insert and was on the verge of referirng me for a GA to have it inserted :o (I was on the verge of kicking her across the room, to be fair)

IS IT as bad as I am thinking it will be? I can take the truth and would rather know!

I am sensitive to any NSAIDs so Ibuprofen beforehand isn't allowed!

Good luck - I can't help with info on the procedure, but hope that it's far less traumatic than you fear.

I have no experience of this procedure but I am a wimp at the best of times. Concentrate on your breathing, try to breathe through your nose and lenghten your exhalation, say count for 4 in and breathout for 6-8 without strain. Just might help you relax thats all. Good luck.

My mother had one and recovered really quuickly, no complications and definitely no regrets.

She's a BIIIIIIG wimp too!

Good luck later - they know what they're doing in there so try not to worry too much.

And let us know how you get on afterwards please.

I had a similar procedure - HSG - a couple of weeks ago. I took 2 nurofen an hour before and it was fine. The most uncomfortable bit was the speculum and that just felt like it does for a smear. I didn't feel them put the catheter through my cervix and I wouldn't have known that the liquid had been put through my tubes if I hadn't been watching the screen.

I was fairly relaxed, which I think helped. Tensing your muscles in that situation makes it all more painful. It will be fine. And it is over in no time at all. :)

Good luck, OP... I don't know what it's like to have that procedure but I do know that if you can plan a treat for yourself for this afternoon, you'll appreciate it! Hope it goes well for you. :)

Hi OP I had this recently (twice) but under general anaesthetic, so I can only let you know that with the straightforward hysteroscopy there was very very little pain afterwards (I took no painkillers other than what they had given me as I woke up).

I do know that the tube they use is tiny. I was expecting to be given a pessary to open up my cervix but they said they didn't need to as the tube was so narrow.

I hope it goes well.

I had mine at 30 and recovered extremely fast wanted home the following morning but wasn't allowed also had very little pain.

Ooh thank you all so much, esp the berathing tips sailorsgal - tried it just now sitting at my desk and felt immediately more relaxed!

Can't say I am not nervous, have made a few jokes about it with a friend just now, but its all bravado!

Don't worry too much, I had a hysteroscopy and was really nervous, but apart from the discomfort of the speculum, it barely hurt at all. Have a big glass of wine when it's all over. Sending you bumps.

I had one but under general anaesthetic. no pain afterwards at all. some shaking and tiredness from anaesthetic. good luck i hope it's ok for you.

I had mine under GA as I was having bits of my cervix cut out at the same time. No problems at all, I was only out for 30 mins or so.

I had a hysteroscopy mirena inserted at the same time under GA.
Brilliant experience, wasnt even intubated, the anaesthetist just maintsined my airway for the short procedure (at my request though, wold normally be a laryngeal mask).
I woukd have a GA for the dentist if i could but i have PTSD.
I dont like having anything done awake

Thanks all, went ok. Had mirena removed, look around, biopsies taken and new mirena inserted. Biopsies killed, but rest not bad! In a lot of pain now, though, but I'll live! Just managed to get to school in time for youngest two, Phew!

Great when it's all over; make sure you relax as much as you can and cuddle a hot water bottle

I was wiped out last night, fell asleep on sofa after posting on here, then in bed by 7 after a bath. Much better today tho :)
