I'm speaking to you Ceebeebies. Where I live, skitters is another word for diarrhoea. Nice. Shitty the Squirrel.

TrillianAstra · 03/09/2011 12:18

Skittering is exactly how squirrels move - sounds very appropriate to me.

There was a Slyvanian Family toy called Skitter/s when I was little. How we laughed.

SnapesMistress · 03/09/2011 12:40

I have never heard of skitters being a slang for the runs, grew up in the westcountry and now live in Yorkshire, where is it from?

MitchiestInge · 03/09/2011 12:41

I think you mean squitters?

MitchiestInge · 03/09/2011 12:44

Concise Oxford English Dictionary © 2008 Oxford University Press:
squitters/ˈskwɪtəz/
â–¶plural noun
informal diarrhoea.
? origin C17: perh. from dial. squit ?to squirt?.

No-one complains about Winnie the Pooh...

zelda1982 · 03/09/2011 12:46

we say "do you have the squits?" Squits also means when you pay someone back and you are now even ie "we're squits now"

fiveisanawfullybignumber · 03/09/2011 12:46

I'd have thought it's more inappropriate as I know it. Short slang for someone very agitated and manic, think of mental illnesses. I find it tactless and offensive in either context.

yellowraincoat · 03/09/2011 12:47

Don't know about spelling, but we def pronounced it skitters. I'm from north of Scotland, partner from Manchester and he used the word too.

ConstanceNoring · 03/09/2011 12:57

upahill · 03/09/2011 15:07

A skitter is someone who takes the mickey out of something where i come from.
A squit is slang for a runny shit.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2011 15:11

skitters means the runs here in Edinburgh, yes

TidyDancer · 03/09/2011 16:13

Squits or shits for diarrhoea, never heard skits or skitters!

A skit is a comedy piece!

Callisto · 03/09/2011 16:15

Skitter is the way something moves.

skit·ter Verb/ˈskitər/

  1. Move lightly and quickly: "the girls skittered up the stairs".
  2. Draw (bait) jerkily across the surface of the water as a technique in fishing
Grandhighpoohba · 03/09/2011 16:57

"the girls skittered up the stairs"

That would take some cleaning up.

MalkieFraser · 03/09/2011 17:08

Aye, I had a chuckle when I watched that. Skitters are definitely the shits.

SardineQueen · 03/09/2011 17:14

Squits around here. Well not right now but you know what I mean Grin

Also "quits" when things are settled and even.

Skittering is a way of moving.

PuppyMonkey · 03/09/2011 17:21

The skitters is used very specifically and categorically to mean the shits in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. We did it at A Level and I have always used the term in its honour.Grin
