To go without a hat?

We are invited to what will be a very smart wedding on Saturday. I have bought an outfit and matching hat but my DD feels the hat ages me!!

I do not wish to be prematurely aged by said hat. I have no time to buy another. So shall I go without a hat? Is it done? Its been years since I have attended a wedding. Help please.

I have never worn a hat to a wedding and wouldn't ever. If you feel happy, wear it, if not, don't. Is your dd old enough to actually have a point?

Lots of people at weddings don't wear hats anymore (nothing worse than 'sweaty hat ring' across your forehead or 'flat hat hair' at the reception!)

I've been to quite a lot of (fairly smart English traditional) weddings in the past few years. I usually only see hats on the mother of the bride and older generation. Most people will be wearing fascinators or just a flower or clip or band in their hair (or indeed nothing at all). Do you have something like that you could wear instead of the hat?

In other words, yes it is fine not to wear a hat, ideally you would wear some kind of decorative item in your hair but not to worry if not!

Unless it says "hats" on the invitation but that would be pretty unusual.

Ditch the hat and spend the refund on something luscious for autumn! Only the older ladies have worn hats at the weddings I've been to lately.

Actually -Whispering- It was grown up DN who said it aged me, but after tatoo debacle she asked me never to mention her on MN again, so I just pretended it was DD.

I'd say No to hats as well, I can't stand the flat hat hair problem once you take it off.

i love hats and would never go to a wedding without one as it is an opportunity that rarely comes along often. However, the last 2 weddings i was the only person wearing one (both posh do's).

So personally i would wear one but i'm just a show off but wouldn't feel i HAD to.

Post a pic - I'm sure it looks lovely. If it's Very Smart you may feel a narna without some headgear!

I'm going to a wedding soon and will not be wearing a hat (mid-50s) as I have very fine hair and it would just get flattened. But I'm a bit worried that I will be the only woman not wearing one. Still, will find out soon enough!

could you take the hat in say the boot of the car and if everyone else is wearing a hat then wear yours , if no one is wearing one leave it in the boot of the car simples

I think it is a shame that the trend is fading to wear something on your head to a wedding, it makes it just another day, rather than something special.

No doubt by the middle of this century females will go in pyjamas.

I went to wedding a couple of weeks ago and only me and the mother of the groom wore a hat (charity shop find . I wear them because I love them and never have the opportunity at any other time, but I'm definitely in the minority now. Get a fascinator instead.

OP unless you are immediately related to the Bride or Groom I would forget the hat (unless super formal wedding).

Get a fascinator as Felix said, Monsoon/Accessorize is probably your best bet and I think delivery is pretty quick with on line orders
