To not understand how Capri Sun is not juice

I have a pouch? carton? whatever of it here.

On the front it says "100% pure juice" under ingredients it says "ingredients: 100% pure juice from concentrates"

On that thread there's loads of talk about how it's not juice is it has all sorts of additives in it.

I know I'll get bollocked for starting a thread about a thread but there are so many messages on that one I can't wade through it to see if anyone has actually listed the ingredients (well, ingredient).

Have I bought a different Capri Sun from the usual one?

concentrates of what?, does it list ingredients on back?

yes, you have bought a different one. The regular ones are juice drinks, you have bought the 100% juice range.

I think it is usually squash, maybe there's a new juice version?

Thank you! It's been baffling me because I bought them for a picnic and I was sure I had checked they weren't full of crap. THus I couldn't understand the thread.

If it's concentrated, it means that the water has been extracted from the juice in the country of origin, and then - once the concentrate has been shipped over to the UK - water is added back to the original level.

This makes shipping considerably cheaper.

It means that technically nothing is in the pouch except juice - but it also means that a fair bit of processing has been going on, and the water has come from a mechanised source, as opposed to the actual fruit.

IMO nothing really much wrong with it - most fruit juices in cartons (especially the ambient ones) are produced like this. It keeps prices down. And there are certainly no added/artificial ingredients.

But a quick look at their website www.capri-sun.co.uk/our-drinks shows that they produce both juice and juice drinks.

The latter have all kinds of other ingredients added, usually sugar.

Yes, it's not the regular one. They're probably hoping people will continue to buy the Capri Sun squash drink thinking that it is now, in fact, real Juice.

You get pure juice, or you get watered down juice... it is all still sodding juice to me!!!!!!!

its not though. One is juice, one is a bit of juice, lots of water and a tonne of sugar. Or in some, artificial sweeteners, colours and flavourings.
How can you not tell the difference?

Can you still buy Sunny D? That used to have vegetable oil in it.

Siamo, in my part of the country, it is still referred to as "juice". If it is a juice based drink then it is juice.

If someone offered me juice, I would expect anything that was juice based from orange squash to freshly squeezed seville oranges, so it would need to be more specific for me to expect pure juice.

Oh Gawd, i haven't seen the other thread, just how bad is the normal Capri Sun drink then (not the new 100% fruit one the original one) - in a Fruit Shoot comparison type manner?

I just posted because everyone was agreeing capri sun was full of crap and I couldn't see any on the ingredients.

I admit to loving the common or garden Capri Sun. Haven't had it for years (used to buy it for DS's packed lunch - go ahead shoot me - he's 20 now and doing fine).

I loved the blackcurranty one, frozen, then slightly thawed out to make slush.

I'm really craving ice at the moment (about 2 bags a day), and this has reminded me to buy some Capri Sun.

Does extracting the water and re-adding it cause it to loose much nutrients, then? I always try to buy Not From Concentrate but I'm not sure why.

These are the ingredients of a Capri Sun Juice Drink:

"Water, fruit juices from concentrate 12% (Orange 7%, Lemon, Acerola Cherry) sugar and natural orange flavouring."

So most of the flavour is coming from sugar and flavours rather than the actual juice. And they are mainly water.

Not from concentrate will be fresher and just generally less mucked around with (a technical term!)

Are you anaemic, littlepiglet ? Both times I've been anaemic in the past I've had a mad ice craving. Apparently it's one of the symptoms.

I had massive ice cravings with both DS' and was severely anemic - didn't know they were connected though!

I saw a new juice version in morrisons the other day (alongside capri suns juice drinks)

so they now have juice drink (full of additives / sugar / crap / water) and juice which has the same packaging (so kids think they have capri sun) and juice inside (so mummy is happy!)

fruitshoots also do a juicey water type thing with no added manky crappy ingrediants, that is pure juice (from concentrate) plus water.... again you can give your child the fruit shoot they want and that their friends have without being forced to give them the crap
