I read a story years ago about a lighthouse that was manned by a crew of three. After the 3 month shift was over the next crew rowed out to relieve them. They found the lighthouse empty - Marie Celeste empty. Half eaten meals and papers half finished. No signs of a struggle. There were however 3 hulking great cormorants hanging about.

The crew reported it and settled in for their shift...

3 months later the next crew rowed out - and found the lighthouse empty. They looked around but apart from the signs that everyone had left in the hurry the only other unusual thing they saw was 6 great black cormorants eyeing them up...

Ever since I read this I cannot stand cormaorants, they do just look too human! Please tell me I am not BU and other people find them creepy too...?

AuntieMonica · 17/08/2011 12:41

Chickens - That has got to be the scariest (yet weirdly funny) bird I have ever seen.

Isn't it sinister? Imagine you were walking through the woods, and see a pretty owl....and then it goes all demon owl on your arse

HairyGrotter · 17/08/2011 12:43

That owl is IMMENSE...I love owls

LadyFlumpalot · 17/08/2011 12:45

MissPenteuth · 17/08/2011 13:19

I'm not creeped out by cormorants. But I am peculiarly perturbed by pelicans.

That transforming owl reminds me of the dinosaurs that ruffle up their neck-folds and spit deadly black goo in Jurassic Park.

LadyFlumpalot · 17/08/2011 14:23

To be fair chickens - really, what more is there to say? Transforming owls and baldy bollock birds...

But do you feel better about the cormorants, Lady? At least they don't look like flying genitals.

RevoltingPeasant · 17/08/2011 14:27

YABU I love cormorants. Get them regularly here (darkest coastal Devon). Shags on the other hand have really furious faces.....

ClaireDeLoon · 17/08/2011 14:27

If you're creeped out by Cormorants how do you feel about Shags?

AuntieMonica · 17/08/2011 14:28

i'm rather fond of shags

YouDoTheMath · 17/08/2011 15:22

I get what you mean about the cormorants. They hang out at a particular part of the Thames that I frequent, perched on this island in the middle of the river flapping their wings for no apparent reason [shudder]

Chickens that thing is frickin' scary.

For the record I am mostly scared of turkeys.

Any bird that's smaller than a human being but isn't scared enough not to give chase is DANGEROUS.

Sandalwood · 17/08/2011 15:30

A cormorant did scare me once. I was sitting on a peaceful riverbank and one burst out of the water just 3 or 4 feet away from me - and it screamed at me as much as I was screaming at it.

ClaireDeLoon · 17/08/2011 15:32

I think they're a bit prehistoric looking, especially when they hold their wings out and just sit like that.

southeastastra · 17/08/2011 15:35

ooh i remember the lighthouse story! i thought the answer was that they all went out in a storm and all got washed out to sea.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 17/08/2011 15:36

I thought the lighthouse story was implying that the workers became cormorants

ClaireDeLoon · 17/08/2011 15:40

I assumed they'd all become Cormorants too. Bewitched by some evil Cormorant Fairy.

LittleWhiteWolf · 17/08/2011 15:41

Thats one freakily hilarious Owl! What kind is it?

AuntieMonica · 17/08/2011 15:44

that's what i thought too, that the cormorants had taken over the lighthouse keeper's soul...mwoahahahaaa!

that's why i hate crows tho, devil's bird and all that gubbins
