I bought a small pack of chicken breasts in co-op yesterday for last nights tea, they were in reduced to clear section. Got home and mil and fil were here (unexpectedly a day early) so didn't use said chicken as was not enough for all of us.
Just got them out of the fridge for tea and noticed they were dated with yesterday's date, but have performed the sniff test and they passed with flying colours. AIBU to use them in tonight's carbonara?

i wouldn't use them if they are out of date....i will use thing past there 'best before' but not the 'use by' date

you can tell if its off by the smell. As long as it is cooked thoroughly you should kill all germs.

I've eaten chicken a week out of date and lived to tell the tale.

Food tends to go by the smell test round her rather than dates. I have bought things in date that were very much off so works both ways

Go ahead. You can really smell chicken if it's gone bad or on the turn.

I've had odd things that I've left out of the bin just to see when they would go bad.

There was a Tesco's own seeded farmhouse loaf that was two weeks past it's sell by and not a mould spot on it. i didn't use it but I suppose I should have. Usually, wholemeal and seeded breads go off very fast. It was lovely bread too if I remember.

Also, when we had a lot of snow earlier in the year, I bulk bought 'Cravendale' milk and left it in the snow in the back garden as there was no room in the fridge. It was there for weeks and still smelt fine.

Hovis origina wheatgerml, however, my favourite bread, goes off at the speed of light. I have to open the packet and start cramming it in my gob as soon as I get out of the shop... Ok... slight exaggeration, but not by much.

Said chicken all fried ready to go in carbonara, will hand out bowls when it's ready, just waiting for the pasta .

You would soon know if they were off. And things do not magically turn manky at midnight on the day they have to be used by , it is not an exact science!

It must be good, dc3 has just asked for seconds (in his own little way-he held his bowl towards kitchen door and said uuh!)

I cooked chicken left out to defrost for 24 hours at the weekend, smelt fine and no injuries to report. Enjoy the carbonara!

I once bought an in date by miles lobster from sainsburys. when I unpacked it I nearly passed out from the smell. I took it back and warned the assistant that if she opened it to check in the store she would clear the place. Bad stuff smells vile so you should be fine

Lying you have summed him up perfectly, he is in fact a man of NO words!! At 19 months old I was hoping for something, but no he communicates with a series of uuhs and pointing .

YABU for putting chicken in a carbonara - everyone knows it should be made with bacon.

I've also had chicken that was in date that smelled awful. Use by dates are not an exact science and normally they err on the side of caution so things with a short shelf life are normally fine for an extra day or two, things with a medium shelf life (eg a month or so) are usually fine for a week or two after and things with a long shelf life could be fine for months, if not years, after the best before date. Also, meat will have a use by date whereas most other things will have a best before date. The best before date just indicates how long the producer is willing to guarantee product quality rather than having anything to do with the safety of eating it, so after that date your onions might start sprouting or your peppers might get a couple of soft bits but they would still be fine to eat.

Go by smell. If it smells fine, it's fine.

I've had problems with in date chicken. Turns out my fridge wasn't cold enough to safely store food. Rectified with purchase of thermometer. Agree that you can tell when chicken is off, it really stinks the place out.
